I sold my last video knife for a comforting offer.
I used a great deal of the money to purchase new files, and forging tools.
I also used the most of the money to buy groceries. So thanks to God, and thanks to those who helped me, or purchased my hard worked knifes for such blessing.

For now "THE START" of a new knife I am going to be working on.
Here is me making the charcoal I am going to need
for this new project.

Check back each day as I will upload more videos
of the progress.

Notice in the video above right next to the forge. Is some more 5160 stock I broke from an entire leaf spring just waiting
to be hammered :),

****MORE UPDATES**** AND ABUSE VIDEOS****
Here is the hardening, and tempering. I did not video myself using the microscope on the edge
like I did the last knife project. Each video for each knife I make will always be unique and different
as to what you get to see.

Lotta work to make that. Is It called coking?

coking is for coal, it burns off the volatiles in the coal leaving coke.

looks a lot like the little snake firework things i played with as a kid, the coal grows significantly and gets "puffy" sticking to other coke as it forms.
the proper maintenance and use of coke during the forging process is a learned skill that is critical to forging with coal.

charcoal is essentially the same concept but with wood. you burn the wood in an oxygen deprived atmosphere to cook off the volatile oils in the wood leaving behind the stable burnable carbons.

or as Cody is doing in his video you can partially burn the wood then put it out with water, leaving charcoal behind. this tends to waste more raw materials but is a little easier to do in small batches.

***UPDATED VIDEOS*****

I update daily usually before I go to bed or early AM. Just keep checking back.

The last video in your first post looks like you have a good fire going and the metal is hot enought. Some of the other video's look like you are working the metal much cooler, although it is hard to really determine on a video. When I first started forging, I had a forge that did not get the metal very hot, so I was working really hard to get it to move. Once I started using a better forge and the correct forging temps, forging got waaaaay easier.

I'm about to update the post with new videos, but I am forging in the cold, and then in the cold and raining, and then it gets colder etc.. Also some of the charcoal would be wet and stick more grey to the knifes blade and you cant see the glow as well, but I know it has enough heat by the "Tone" of the metal when I am hitting on it. I always start using a magnet to warm myself up, and also so I can see how the steel looks in what weather I am forging in. For example.. the steel may be red, blackish looking, but still be non-magnetic while I have been forging in the cold, and rain. The next day though.. it might have to look almost yellowish before it's non-magnetic.

So keeping in mind charcoal variations such as damp charcoal, and cold temperature drops I tend to use the magnet more until I accomidate to the weather. In cold and rainy like this.. I will definitely use the magnet during hardening. Im going to also taking in considerationg the 1 second distance from the forge in the cold rainyish weather to my quench tube by letting the knife get a little hotter above non-magnetic than with normal room temperature quenching. Not too hot to cause grain growth, but enough to not fight with the file biting in my blade because I didnt get it hot enough, and it didnt harden properly. I'm going to quench a dummy peice of steel to warm up my canola oil prior to quenching my blade. As far as forging and color is concerned once you know the resonant sound ("Tone) of the metal your working you know when not to hit on it. Your a smith and knife maker from your member title so I'm sure you already know this forgive me for rambling.

IN regards to the capability of my forge. My forge easily generates enough wind through the hand cut tweers to liquify metal, and make me angry if I forget and "OOPS" .. melted the knife away LOL. If you notice the way I control air flow, and with good charcoal I get it hot however I want it, and then back off the air, and it stays glowing when you have great charcoal.

Forgive my long reply. It's my OCD disorder. I apologize.

Updated the post with 20 more videos!

Enjoy!

All of the videos you are watching. I am going to burn onto a DVD so that this entire thing will be one single video. And the DVD will be playable in a DVD player. As Geunine authentification of it being hand made. Tomorrow guys.. check back :) Tomorrows the good stuff! I will be hardening, and quenching AND THEN .. doing a mild steel bar edge test. I will take a mild steel round bar, place it on the edge, and hit it with a hammer to cut into it to see how my edge holds up. I will be tempering on coals, spine down edge up. I will video all three times as well. This will get it good and flexible should my knife ever see the vice! I am also going to razor up the edge, and chop 2x4's during tempering, and will use my magnifier to inspect the edge, but so far I pretty much have tempering for 5160 down. I however still like to micro manage the edge JUST to be sure! I will video this as well! I will do a shave test after chopping the 2x4 and record it, and GOSH if I am lucky enough to find a 1" rope I will do a rope cut, and if not I will bundle two smaller ropes together just to get some kind of rope cutting action.

Right now I just normalized the blade 3 times to magnetic north(I know superstition, but I'm superstitious), and right now the blade is sitting in hot coals. It will be over night annealing. I have had it covered in hot coals for 4 1/2 hours now. I will go outside in another two hours and feed more coal, and before bed time. Take all that stress out my weapons steel that I put on it with the hammer, and cold\wet climate I have been forging through LOL.

So check back tomorrow!

Dude, thats Gangster.
Its been cold down here and rainy, its got to be cold in SA
Did you learn bladesmithing in ABS School??
Got some Arkansas technique going on there.

Holler at me when you get down to Corpus...

Nope no schooling brother. Just will power and determination. In all honesty I sold my last knife on craigslist. I was curious if someone would buy it. I sold that knife 4 hours after posting. I showed the video proof of it's entire creation, and it sold brother! I guess people like watching this stuff get built ground up. When the cash hit my hand all I wanted to do was forge another knife!

Here is me doing ABUSE TEST to this blade!

Soon as I free up a week I will be coming down specifically to visit.
I just been busy, but wont skip a chance to visit a pro.
Yeah it's been cold, rainy, and windy, and Ive been out there forging the ****k out of that knife. I cant get my damn mind off any knife I get to working on.
Nothing stops me. It was all rainy and wind blowing nasty outside, and freezing but my mind was on hot steel. Otherwise I was stuck inside with crap to do.

making them dollars.

EDIT TO THIS POST:

Mike.. I spoke to the wife. This weekend were going out of town, but the saturday\sunday after this. We are talking about renting a hotel somewhere around corpus christi\your pad since. This way I can come alone to your pad, and also have the wife a place to watch over the kids while I come check out your shop and blades. I got family down there as well so I will make the most of it all, but for me. It's to come check out Snodys world.

Im kind of new to this whole ABS stuff. I have beleif in my heart my 5160 spring steel knifes will hold up. I just dont know where they hold these events to qualify one of my knives. I dont know exactly what all ABS requires for junior smithing certification etc.. Ive been forging for a while now. I throw knifes also. Looking to join a knife throwing association as well. I'm hoping to get some insight on how to go about qualifying my knives(myself represented in my knives) with ABS and so forth.

Thanks to snody showing me in a quote the html tags for this board.
I went ahead and changed the entire post as to show video's without having to click
on each link as before which is a pain in the rear end.

Added ***ABUSE VIDEO***

The Abuse video was lengthy, and had to be reduced to standard AVI 360-480p format.
To see the hair being shaved you will need to select 480P for video quality while watching that particular video. The rest are all in HD 1080p.

I sold this knife for 300$ + A Diamond hone. Needed money, and a proud buyer will be picking it up tomorrow. Here is the last video I made for the knife.
