I think I found my new perfect EDC !

Ok, I should admit I feel that way almost twice per year, but this time, it's for sure !:D

I found it in last week-end knife show in Paris (SICAC), made from a South african knife maker, named Fred Burger.

First of all, if your kind of EDC is a big Strider, that knife is not for you !

If your kind of knife is more like small sebenza, U2 or TK4 fallkniven… you should have a look at it!

Blade is 440c, not the last steel of the month, but much sufficient and tasted /approved over the years.
Handle is red G-10, quite "sheep friendly", with clip and liner is made from blue Titanuim
One hand opening system quite efficient also (it's a "lip")

Basically, what I like in this knife is the size and the blade, nearly perfect, and his light weight.
Also adjustements are good and there is zero play in the blade.
It was really sharp when I baught it and remains so after few lunchs, so for the moment I can't told you if it's easy to resharpen (but 440C is supposed to !)

If ever you see this SA knife maker in a knife show around, I suggest you see him.
He has quite good and cheap product, and he is a gentleman, it's a pleasure to discuss with him!
I pay for this knife 140 euro (180US$) and it deserves it !

see bellow my collection of small EDC with red handdle !

fred Burger is more specialised in canesword and you could see his product (cane and folder) in his bellow website

Freddy,That knife looks great, and you're saying all the right things, light,no blade play, edgeholding sharpness, and value.Did he have other color handles?I like the blade shape, too, and the size looks perfect foe edc,tip down. Nice score!!

hi VCM3,
from their site, they seems to have it in black also, but best thing is to drop them a mail...
I just send them one to request autorisation to post pics of it, and they answer me within 1/2 hour !:D

Freddy, Thank you for all the help.I did in fact mail them. After I posted I realized you had thier site info right there in front of me! They already answered, too. It seems they are out of town,so he is going to get back in touch, when he is back at the shop.I'm looking fortward to this.I liked the wood /bolstered model,of the Exkeliber, too. Nice looking knives!!Thanks Again, for posting pictures, and telling us about this maker and his knives, and the quick review of your knife.

I'll try to post you additionnal pics tomorow, but beware, this knife is quite addictive... it's been 3 days i am playing with (closed, open, closed, open, flipping, etc!):D

Kamsingh, the HP is also really nice, (and cheaper, it was 20 euro less !)
I much hesitate between both but finally choose the Mk1, reason beeing that i found his blade more "beefy".
What was nice with the HP was his amazing weight... you have to hold it to believe!
Kindda feather knife !
Both same lock, as far as i remember, liner lock.
You could send them e-mail for additional info, they are quite reactive !

Nice EDC's, they all look designed to cut very well. I tend to carry similar knives...Opinels, SAKs and Spydercos.

opening is via thumbstud, correct? bummer, it looks like a righty-only thumbstud. i do like the knife though, particularly the blade profile. thanks for sharing.

edit: actually, i don't understand how it opens. can someone explain?

Freddy,If you could, when you take more pictures, try to show the "lip",on the blade for opening. That would be much appreciated,Thank You,
Vince

ok, here are some additionnal pics

you could see a bit of the "lip" on it.
There is no thumbstud, but one millimeter of additionnal steel on the back of the blade.. on the pic, you see it close to the "kershaw leek".

one more, in order to see its size.
sligtly smaller than the U2 fallkniven

i spend some time last night sharpen ing it and it was quite easy to have it kindda "razor sharp".
I don't know if it would hold the edge for long (i have'nt eaten with since) but it won't take long to re-do it..

Zidane, in first pic, i put the knives in a big shell (giant clam) i found recently in Thailand beach... nearly 5-6 kg !:D

if you compare it to small sebenza
Specifications Small Sebenza
Blade material S30V Stainless Steel
Blade hardness 58-59 RC
Blade length: 2.94" (75mm)
Blade thickness: 0.125" (3.175mm)
Overall length: 6.875" (175mm)
Handle material: 6A14V Titanium
Weight: 2.9 ounces

Specifications Burger MK1 Exkalibur
Blade material 440C
Blade hardness 58-60 RC
Blade length: 2.94" (75mm)
Blade thickness: 0.125" (3.175mm)
Overall length: 6.5" (165mm)
Handle material: G10 and lock/clip is Titanium
Weight: ?? but light !

so basically, same size and shape of small sebenza blade, handle is 1 cm shorter but ergonomy is remains really good.

I recently contact Burger Knives in order to know if they intend to produce a "large" Exkalibur (as mine as become my new EDC since months now, all my benchmade/spyderco/customs are crying ...:p ).

and the good news is...
they are starting production of a large modele !

there is still what i like on it (G10 which give lightness, and it's soo thin.. )
I am not sure but i suspect totla size will now be around 21 cm

i honestly prefer my small model without thumbstub, but as i was dreaming for month about a large model...i think i would soon have to think about my christmas gift...

those pics were sent to me by Burger yesterday, so i have'nt had the chance to "hold" it:yawn:

That is a very nice looking knife!! Congrats!! I like red too, because it is different.

yep, i prefer it red also (especially with the blue anodized titan clip, it is nice and really sheeple friendly ! )

TheKnifeCollector, if you like the shape of the blade of the sebies, but want a "light" alternative, i strongly suggest you look at Burger if you managed to see them during bladeshow...
I think Sebies are probably twice heavier than same sized Burger (but it's normal, if you compare weight of titan vs G10)... then after it's purely a question of taste :)

Personaly, my only titan framelock is Cuba Dominador, and my taste is more G10 handle, honestly...

ok, i just order my new EDC... a large Exka !
Barry Burger has been really nice and friendly, and it's a pleasure to order from him.(see bellow his message)

"Thank you for your reply Frederic, you are correct the laptop can consume a lot of knife making time!! But this is also an important part of the process! OK thank you for your order I will build you a special Large Exk Mk1 with red G10 no Ti Thumb peg and we will not mill the slot so you will have a lip. We have Ti Pocket clips and I will not charge for this as it is your second order. The blade length is 94mm and handle length is 120mm. I should have your order on the way to you in about 10 days time with a delivery window to France of 7 business days. I have had some response questions coming in from the forum, and I hope to get new pictures up on our web site late next week."

asap i get it, i'll post a review for you !:D
