Behold! The nekkid BK-17 with a dark vinegar patina…

nekkid1701.jpg

Several hours in a vinegar bath turned the blade a nice even dark charcoal colour. I don’t think my pic does it justice, but if you note the small shiny bald spot just above the handle (that was me trying to bring out the grind lines with a rectangular stone and catching a corner) you’ll get an idea of just how dark the blade is.

Anyway, I’m fairly pleased with the end-result. After all, it be my first time strippin’… :o No need to be jammin’ dollar bills into my skivvies or anything, but thanks for looking! :D

Cheers!

Nice work. I've gotta try that patina at some point. Now all you need is matching ss hardware ;)

Thanks guys! I wanted to see how dark I could go. I left it soaking until the blade took on a slightly brownish tint. Took it out, rinsed, dried and rubbed it down with a coarse cotton cloth. I was impressed by how even the colour turned out.

Great job! What did you use to strip the blade?

I picked up a can of furniture stripper down at a small mom 'n pop hardware store. Not a lot to choose from on their shelves. Concerned that the instructions indicated it was for use on wood products, I asked the fella who worked there if they had anything specifically for metal. He gave me a blank stare and said "It don't matter what's undernearth, boy." Skeptical, I bought it anyway.

Whale oil beef hucked...

Worked like a charm. :D

I think it's the lines, but something about the 17 makes is way more smexy stripped. Not that the 15 and 16 don't look good, but 17 just has it going on!
