but I bet there ain't a bunch of steel that's a BUNCH BETTER than VG-10.

Every time I get a VG-10 knife, I just can't believe how good it is.

:)

S30V and D2 both outdo VG-10 on terms of general toughness, but VG-10 is actually more corrosion resistant than S30V, and not as brittle as D2. (While D2 is very strong, it's also very brittle, and so is best suited to smaller knives made for slicing.)
I don't know if they're *that* superior; rather they just excel at different things. The three of them are all excellent steels.

The S30V on my wife's Native ($40 from WM) take a nice edge and holds it for a very long time. I think S30V is hard to beat in a reaonably priced knife.

I agree with you. There are steels that are better then vg-10 but nothing that is easily accesible is a bunch better then vg-10.

Something like m4, cpm 10v (phil wilson customs use it), or cpm s90v are probably the closest thing to being a bunch better but none are very accesible to productions knives YET. Lots of talk about s90v so keep your fingers crossed.

I prefer certain steels in certain types of knives. VG10 is awesome in kitchen knives and slim EDC knives designed for slicing. I might prefer S30V in a harder use knife but I find VG 10 and the other mid grade stainless like 440C and aus8 as well as VG 10 are more corrosion resistant(440C especially) and take a sharper edge.

When it comes to survival knives I like tool steel. There is no better in cutlery steel only better at certain jobs.

Theres no steel thats "the best". We only feel it's the best in our own opinions. All steels have their pros and cons.

Personally for me, VG-10 happens to be my favorite steel. It doesn't stay sharp as long as some others like D2, S30V, etc etc but I find it gets super sharp and is ridiculously easy to sharpen.

I agree, of all my knives VG-10 is the easiest of the super steels to sharpen.
I don't know what they did, but that stuff has the best combination of characteristics I've used (sharpenability, edge holding, toughness).
Very good stuff.

(Though I'd still rather have ZDP-189 on anything smaller than 3.5")
