I bought a basha

I can't find an existing thread on this subject so I thought I'd post a few details.
I thought it would be interesting to obtain an army surplus basha to see what they were like so I bid on one on ebay and won it. It's a desert camo one. I would marginally have preferred woodland but the desert seem to go for less money so that was ok.
I popped it on the kitchen scales and it weighs a fairly solid 2lb 5oz. Though a small amount of that is some of Iraq that someone brought home with them.

Here is is spread out on the grass: It is approximately 8'5" x 7'.

I thought I'd have a go at putting it up, this is some desert paracord tied into a loop with which I intend to make my first ever prusik knot.

This is the basha erected: One end of the paracord is tied to a trekking pole set to 1.2 metres, the other to a fence post. Arguably it would be better to use it the other way up so the webbing reinforcement on the edges is underneath but then you lose those useful loops which I threaded the paracord through. So I'm not sure about that.

Obviously you can vary the way you put it up: Higher ridge, steeper slope, etc. The eyelets and various loops and handles all seem very strong.

Phase 2: doing the same thing but with a cheap tarp!

This thing weighs only 12.5 oz.

And erected:

I put the supporting string underneath and secured it with bungees because I don't want to rip the eyelets out on it's first outing! You might want one of these for emergencies because they are very light. Not to mention cheap, I paid £3 for this one.

I hope that is of some interest :)

Certainly interested here. Seems better than most things I've seen made out of plastic sheets.
I'll keep my eye out for one, good find :)

Edit: the only ones I can find on the net are like $40. Weird. I'll try the bay too.

Obviously, you would mainly use this to protect yourself from rain.
What would you do if the soil was really wet? You probably don't want to roll around in that.

Looks like a nice setup that should pack up really easily. You're right about 2lbs 5oz being a little heavy for its size. It must be pretty damn durable.

What I'm most interested in is that you have shadows. I'm eagerly awaiting those :)

They are around £40 brand new but used ones can be got for a lot less and they seem very durable. There is no sign at all of damage or wear on mine, it's just faded a bit. Genuine British army sleeping bags have (or at least used to have) a waterproof underside but if the ground is really wet you'd need to sling a hammock I suppose.

It does roll into quite a compact bundle, I meant to photograph it before unrolling it but I forgot. It certainly seems to be extremely strong and the army use them as stretchers for carrying casualties, via the handles at the edges and centre.

It took me longer to put up than it usually takes me to erect a 2 man tent but practice would improve that I suppose, that and having all the paracord pre-cut and attached.

Why was the midget bobby (with WAY to much rifle) inspecting your tent set up?

;)

Lol, the camo tarp is actually his, I picked it up for him to play with. He was playing in 1879 mode though, Martini-Henry and tropical helmet (actually a bobbies helmet painted white).
