I scored a paragon pyrometer on ebay this week hoping to improve my heat treating..I checked my coffee can forge today and the burnsomatic ts 8000 (with map gas) is pushing it to over 1850 degrees. I've got to try to cool it down a little. I'm almost scared to try my big forge, that monster has got to be screaming:eek: do most knife makers use a pyrometer??

My forge is usually running outside the range of a type K, and getting equipment that reads above 2500F is not as easy as 0-2000F.

I've never found the need for a reading inside the forge. If I'm welding, I can tell where we are by the nature of the glow from the forge, and from the work piece. Some call it "the color" of the steel. It's a highly effective method, though it might sound nebulous to someone that hasn't done a bit of forge welding.
I've read that some guys are running pyrometers in forges, but it seems like a waste of time to me. Save the pyrometer for your heat treat oven.
