I broke my Gunting!!!!!! 8-(

I was using my Gunting to shave the plastic tops off of those office-type water jugs. They were being a little annoying so I applied some more pressure and then SNAP!!!! the damn tip broke right off of my Gunting!!! I have never broken a tip off of a knife in my life and I was not using the Gunting for ANY prying!

I don't know if this is a design flaw or what caused this....

How can I be helped by spyderco? Does Spyderco cover broken tips? (I know some companies don't)

What can I do?!?!? I've been angry as hell since it happened!

This is especially annoying since this is a numbered Gunting! If Spyderco can replace it for me will the new one be numbered???

Thanks in advance for any help

So, you were shaving the tops off the water jugs, eh? With the tip?! Or did you jam the tip into something after slipping off the top of the jug?

Sounds pretty odd, but.... I believe that Spyderco will probably fix it, or replace it. But, not for free, probably, and it probably shouldn't be. I doubt it will be with a numbered piece. Especially not the same number, if that's what you are asking.

Just my thoughts....

I was shaving the top... it wouldn't slide off... I guess I pushed too hard... as the knife slid off, the tip caught the lip of the jug and 'snap!'...

Give me the benefit of the doubt, man. I don't abuse my knives and this has never happened to me before.

You don't have to rub it in my face that I messed up...

I would think that Spyderco will want to see the knife, since the Gunting is a new model.
They will want to see if there is a manufacturing problem. I think you are out of luck concerning the numbered blade though.
I could be wrong and this is just my $.02.
Call Spyderco and Good Luck.

I think Easy hit it on the head. I'd bet Sal will want to check the blade to see if it's at the correct hardness. I'm pretty sure I've read that he's been interested in doing this on other new models in the past. In the interim, good thing the Gunting's so useful closed!

Hi Think. Sorry for your discomfort. Glad no one got hurt...slips often do that. Try not to be angry though. It's not good for the soul and makes for less control.

Don't know why or how much of the blade broke. Should send it to us though. We need to test it. Could be our fault.

Besides, we made the piece and we're probably the only ones that can fissit.

you'll get a numbered piece ..REALLY..
hardening CPM440V is very tuff even for the good guys..
Sal and the SPYDIE staff will make it good..
and of course you'll get your number..I'll work on it myself ..the number not the knife..LOL...

Thanks Sal...

TOTC, I'm sorry. I didn't intend to be/sound mean. Just stating my thoughts on what would probably happen. I'm surprised by Bram's statement above, but it sounds like he and Sal are going to take care of it for you.
When my Native got chipped or rolled on the end because of my... errr.... mistake, Sal fixed it right up. But, that only required a sharpening, I believe. If I had broken the tip, I would expect to have to have to pay something to get it fixed, and/or certainly not expect to get the same serial number if it required a new blade. Anything more than that is above and beyond the call of customer service, but it appears that THAT is exactly what Spyderco is going to do for you. So.... good job Sal. And, again, sorry TOTC.
