I can now carry a knife on the airplane...

If it means you carry at least a small Swiss Army Knife, that's a big improvement. It's a shame what we have to accept as "an improvement", though.

Actually I just checked Civil Aviation - and it has to be non-lockable AND under 6cm, so we're talking about wee victorinoxes :(

They do specifically mention kubatons as prohibited though.

People fly from one end of New Zealand to the other often?

Sure do - Auckland to Wellington is an 8 hour drive or a 1 hour flight. South Island is a must fly unless you want to take the scenic route!

Isn't ALL of New Zealand the scenic route?
Seriously, any movement towards a more sane set of air regulations, no matter how minor, is nice to hear about.

I recently travelled with two other people from Schiphol to Varna in Bulgaria, with a stopover in Vienna. One of us decided to take a knife with him, which set off the detector on all checkpoints. He was allowed to keep it however, even at the checkpoint in Vienna which was pretty thorough. It was a non-locking wooden-handled no-name folder with a ± 6 or 7 cm. blade.

Some progress here, too... I wouldn't take the chance - I guess, unless I bought myself a small Opinel for a few euros, just to try how far it would come!
