I bought a A Lansky to shrpen my knives. Man can it shapen serrations, but for the life of me I CANNOT sharpen this chisel edge Cqc7 with it. I have used the factory recommended 30 degree angle and all I have done is flatten out the grind right beneath the black coating, the actual edge isn't even getting touched. I even tried putting the rod on top of the clamp to get a truer angle. Is it me, or this sharpener or this worthless knife. I don't have any non serrated knives to test out so I don't know what to do. SOS!

Its the clamp thats the problem... it's only got 2 angle grooves and neither are obtuse enough to maintain an angle similar to the original.

Go buy a Gatco system.

Hmm, never really had that problem with my Lansky/ Benchmade CQC7. I used the 30 degree hole and sharpened it. Are you sure that the blade is clamped correctly in the clamp??
And to my knowledge, Dashunde, the Lansky has 4 holes, not just two. Check their website and you will see.
Toe, your guide rods may also have been slightly bent. Try and check to see if they're straight. If all else fails, maybe try talking to either Lansky or Emerson.
Good luck

Try clamping the knife so that the spine is right up against the screw that holds the clamp together. That should make the angle more obtuse. If that doesn't work, then you're SOL as far as the Lansky is concerned, unless you want to re-profile the edge on your CQ-7 to match the angle the lansky is grinding at. One other option if you just want to get the knife sharp is to send it to Edge Pro for they're free trial sharpening offer. I'd be careful doing that one though; you might not be able to resist buying one! Don't be too put off by the Lansky; it isn't the most versatile system but it will work fairly well on more conventional knives. Good luck Toecutter.

Do you feel a burr on the flatside of the blade? If you do just strop it with a flat cardboard like a writing pad. Also, what Lansky kit you're using? Is it the basic or Diamond?

You haven't yet ground the bevel to match one of the built in angles of the lansky system. Just use the coarse stone and get that done and it will all fall together after that. Take care.

Should I be using the hand motion as described in the instructions or do something else?I don't want to wreck this knife, but at this point I 'm afraid I'm going too. Any input is appreciated Thanks a billion.

carnifex,
I noticed that later after my post, but they did make a cheapO a few years ago with only 2 slots.
