I cannot unscrew my pivot on my para 2, any ideas?

Hey guys,

So I purchased a new para 2 a few days ago. Received it, and what do you know, it has some side to side blade play. I don't mean blade bending, but actual play in the pivot. Some people can stand this, I cannot. So, I figured I'd take down the knife, re lube everything and play with the pivot tightness but for the life of me, I cannot unscrew the pivot. It seems the loctite spyderco uses is doing a really good job at holding that pivot in place. So, should I send this knife in to spyderco and have them try and fix this or do it myself? If I do it myself, does anyone have an idea on how to unscrew this pivot that won't budge? Thanks in advance for the responses guys!

i think it has hex head slots on both sides, meaning you have to have a hex head to hold it steady on one side and one to unscrew on the other side, if that makes sense. this might be why

Boil some water hold knife in water with pivot submerged for 20 sec pull it out , if it is lock tighted this will make it come loose .

You can also apply the tip of a low wattage soldering iron to the head of the screw for a few seconds and it will help loosen the bond of the loctite. Im not familiar with the pivot of the spyderco but if you have an issue with the pivot spinning in its place you can also turn a mouse pad over and place the opposite side of the pivot on the rubber so it will grip the pivot while you try backing out the screw. This wont work if there serious amounts of thread lock. Its only if the pivot spins freely and there isnt a second area for another wrench.

take it to your local knife shop & they generally do it for free or at most a buck or two

Use a Torx T10 on the pivot, T6 on the pocket clip, and T9 on all the other screws. Which model para 2 is it? The black blade ones won't be as smooth as the satin because of the coating. I recently got a camo/black and will send it in to Spyderco soon because I'm having to choose between smooth action or side to side blade play when I adjust the pivot.

Thanks for the replies. I am using 2 T10 drivers, one on one side to hold it in place and another to unscrew it. I may just send it in but being that this is my first spyderco, I have no idea what to expect from them. I would had to send my knife in just to have them send it back without doing anything but I guess I won't know until I do it.

There is Loctite holding the screws together. As far as G10 being hurt by boiling water, that isn't going to happen. Do some reading on what G10is, it's basically chemical resistant and some of the toughest material you can find. It is after all made from woven glass fibers nad various epoxy binders. A soldering iron, hair dryer, or boiling water will help break the loctite and loosen the screws. The pivot on the Para2 is not like your standard bolt and screw. You can't lube the play away, not clean it out or anything else. The pivot bushing, not bolt is designed similar to the way a Sebenza pivot is, tightened all the way down will allow fluid movement of the blade and is supposed to eliminate play (not always the case).

Regular pivot, not my picture:

Well, I'll send it in to Spyderco and see if they can fix it. I'm kind of upset because I heard all these awesome things about para 2's and my first one new out of the box has significant blade play..... Despite this, it is an awesome knife. Very cool design and being that this is my first spyderco, I really like the flat ground leaf shape blade.

Well of all the great things I've heard about the para2, the one negative that always comes up is blade play. I can't speak from experience since mine has zero play, just saying what I've heard/read.

PM2 uses blue loctite.
I've had several and none had problem being unscrewed. Just give it a good tug with T10.

The blade play is there, but it's pretty minor.
It's pretty much frame:washer:blade:washer:frame, and washer has thickness so blade play can not be avoided to some extent.
I've learned to live with mine, but tbh, compared to some cheaper EDC folders, PM2 has close to zero lateral blade play when tightened properly.

If you end up taking it apart, don't forget that the pivot bushing is polarized. One side of the bushing has a notch that lines up with the matching liner.

Regarding blade play, my camo/satin has none and is still the smoothest opening/closing knife I have.

An update guys. I took gtopper's advice and dipped my para 2 in boiling water and that broke the loctite seal. I proceeded to take my para 2 apart, put some lube on the pivot because apparently spyderco doesn't factory lube their knives, and if they do, it's a drop or less. Anyways, I re-assembled my para 2 and played with the tightness of the pivot and just about got ride of the blade play. The action is pretty stiff now but still usable but as this is a new knife, it should break in nicely and hopefully the blade play will stay away.
