Hi all !
i'm looking to buy a knife, my first serious knife in fact. My purpouse for it would be to use it for camping a couple of times a year ( not heavy duty camping ) and to use it as an unboxing knife, and just a gentleman's folder. I do not intent to edc this knife or any knife in general. The knives i'm looking into now are :
-benchmade 470 emissary
-benchmade 477 emissary
-benchmade 943 osborne
-Spyderco C134CFP Gayle Bradley
-spyderco manix 2
-spyerco military ( although i think this might be too tactical -ish )
-MCUSTA BASIC SERIES AFRICAN EBONY WOOD

those are the one's i'm looking into now... if anyone has opinions, other knives that are suitable for my usage or opinions ! please share them :)

and please tell me wich one you'd choose from this list ! thanks

ps: i live in Belgium so the knives i'm looking to buy can't be auto knives, they can be assisted opening as long as the first part of the opening is mechanical ( like the benchmade knives )

Generally I would recommend a cheap beater knife for camping and something you can keep nice for use as a gentleman's folder. But if you want a one knife solution, I would probably recommend the Gayle Bradley from this list. Classy materials for EDC, but built like a tank for hard camping use when you need it.

A few strong contenders not on this list are: Spyderco Vallotton, ZT 0770CF, and ZT 0801.

yeah i might have been asking to much to have it all in one knife... so if i were to get 2 knives i think my favourite gentleman's folder would be one of the benchmades... but what would you recommed for a cheap beater knife ? a tenacious ? or something like a ganzo or enlan chinese replica's ?

I'd recommend an Ontario Rat I or Utilitac II. Both great budget options. I've had a Ganzo and while the price was right and the design was cool, the build quality was sub-par with lots of blade play. I don't think it would fail on me with hard use, but I don't care to find out. The Tenacious is a fine option too, if you like the look.

EDIT: Or if it's going to be a dedicated camp knife, you might want to look into some fixed blade options like a Mora companion, Becker BK14, or ESEE Izula.

thanks for your insight ! i'm deffo going for a cheap camp knife i like the mora companion, but for my folder i can't descide between the benchmade 477, 470 or the 493... i like the weight of the 470 but i think i might be just a little too small ( my hands bottom of my palm to middle finger tip are 21 cm or 8.26 inches) so i don't know if my hands would be too big for that ? so then i tought maybe 477 but the weight is almost double for only half an extra inch of blade lenght.... and that doesn't seem worth it ! and then there is the 943 osborne wich is sort of in the middle ! on paper the 943 is best for me i think, but i love the look and design of the 477...

From the list provided, I would choose the Manix 2

Ditto on the Manix 2.

If budget is a concern, I've found through use that the Ontario Rat 1 is about the best all around folder out there for the money. AUS8 steel done right. Takes a nice edge. Easy to sharpen. Full flat grind is great around camp but the blade is large enough for some moderate chores. Haven't seen too many that can compare for a $30.00-$35.00 knife.

I can only comment on by 943, it does everything I could ask for in an EDC knife! Also great in the kitchen! Excellent knife.

I have both the Gayle Bradley and the Manix 2 (CTS-XHP sprint) and I can say they are both great knives. Though I give the GB the edge over the standard Manix 2. However the XHP and Cruwear sprints are something to behold. Not a big Benchmade fan.

well this will be my first serious "edc" knife ( allthough i won't really edc on a regular basis) so i really do have to make a choice between spyderco and benchmade... so far both are equal to me... how comes you don't like benchmade ?

I vote for the Benchmade 943. I have a 940-1 and its one of my favorite knives. lightweight, small in the pocket but nice blade lenth, good ergos and butter smooth. I love it.

the Millitary? tactical? ....really, I feel like the Emissary is a way more tactical knife than the millie.

The Military is great in food prep but a little too big for my taste. I have an S90V Millie and have never carried it. But the BM 940-1 gets pocket time and I have 3 Sebenzas. The Millitary is a great knive if you don't mind carrying something that big. but I just love the 940 series and thing you should go with that 943.

I would take the Emissary out of the list and choose between the 943, Mantix, Millie Bradley. The emissary in my opinion would not suite you well as a camping knife.
