Which would be better for:

garden use: cutting tomato and peppers, trimming rose bushes, cutting twine

kitchen use: cutting veggies, meats, ect...

light camp use

general cutting: envelopes, boxes

I don't need a chopper. Would really like it to slice. Light weight.

I just cant decide between the two. I know you rats can help me out. What are the pro and cons with both of these. I did some searches, but I still can't order one. I need your help. Thanks in advance.

Obvious win/win solution here.....

Flip a coin to see which one you buy now....the other comes later!:D

I vote for the Bog Dog without hesitation. For the uses you mentioned the thinner, more wear resistant D2 blade should outperform the howling rat.

Another vote for the Bog Dog. I hear great things about the BD. I love the HR for heavier tasks.

Hi,

I ordered both and should be getting it soon. It was shipped on 3 Feb, Eric, thanks very much.

honestly they are two entirely different knives. given that the howling rat is almost full flat grind, one is 3/16 vs 1/8, and the cutting edge on the howling rat is deceavingly short. the choil on the howling rat really eats into your cutting edge since there is almost 0 flat edge on it, its all belly. for light duty, the d2 will hold an edge longer and maintain better under small impacts.

its not as tuff for heavy duty beating, but the heat treat they do on the d2 makes it the toughest d2 on earth.
