I got a stockman knife and the clip blade opens so hard I darn near break a thumbnail trying to do it. Any practical way to make it easier to open?

AG Russell was selling some old Hen and Rooster knife openers. I have one of the openers, but don't know if it'll work for you or not. It won't make the knife itself easier to open, but it'll save your nails while you're 'playing' with it.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Send it back if you can. The spring will never get significantly looser. I carry a remington bullet knife opener (aka knife pick) on my keychain. Its a little awkward to use, but it will save your nail on a hard to open blade.

When I got interested in knife picks, I talked to a few collectors and makers about them. I asked Tony Bose if he ever made any. He replied that not only had he never made one, but every time he tried to use one to open a knife he cut himself.

What kind of stockman is it? Want to make sure I don't get one. :p

well you could send it back, use a penny, or blade opener (sometimes you find the remington, winchester, or other blade openers on ebay, also if you call magnum boker in colorado they have them for sale for around $6.96 apiece I believe).

Other wise you could leave it half way open, but if it is significantly hard to open (due to the backspring) it could take a year, or more to loosen the backsring. Have you tried a lubricant to see if it helps at all?

If it has a half stop, you'll have to leave it half open for a long long time :D

Thanks for all the help. The knife is an old Schrade 8OT I've had in the drawer for a few years. I did try to oil it. And I will leave it half-opened to see how that works out. If all else fails, I will get one of those knife-openers--Mooremaker sells them. It does seem that it would be a hassle, though, to hunt up your knife pick every time you wanted to open the knife.

You could try leaving it open 1/4 of the way, like in the store displays. My 8OT was an ACE Hardware store display, and after years of being partially open the spring is considerably weaker than any other OldTimer I've handled.

Good Luck,
Bob
