I can't keep an edge on my Bk-11, why?

Hi all,

I haven't been able to keep an edge on my Bk-11. I'll get it sharp, then the next day, I'll pick it up & test the edge on my arm hair..& it's gone..dull. I don't understand why. I've taken good care of the knife, kept it clean, oiled,
& well-maintained but it won't hold an edge. I don't have any real problem sharpening either carbon-steel or flat-grinds. The knife has held up through all I've used it for. It's been a good, fine little knife. I sharpened a knife made
from an old tool-file right beside it (a knife I made--so, it's nothing compared
to the Bk-11) but it's edge held. I've been using a fine-grit diamond honing
rod, I've also tried ceramic, aluminum-oxide, glass, tool-files--I've done everything I've learned to do. Maybe it's me. I don't know, but I like that little
knife alot. It has stuck with me & not let me down once. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Bored-2-Deth..

Its the sheath, after a couple of in and outs on the sheath, it will dull the fine edge. I suspect the knife is still "sharp" by most standards, but, those sheaths take the "hair popping" edge off quickly.

Good luck, and not to worry, it won't always do that.

Thank you all for the replies :)

Actually, I hated the sheath from the get-go & tossed it aside. :) It's stayed, since I've
had it, wrapped up in soft, clean cloth. I noticed that problem with the sheath from the
day I recieved the knife. It quickly grew to become one of my most favorites. I've tried
stropping it on leather, nylon, cotton cloth, cardboard, catalog paper. I can hone most knives to a razor's edge easily, even when their chipped up, blunted, or flattened. I've often use a variety of materials, tools, & methods--& I've tried everything I know on my
Bk-11. Well, even if it doesn't ever hold a hair-popping edge, it's a good little knife & I'll
not easily set it aside. :) I usually don't need anything more than a fine-grit rod & a sheet of catalog paper to get a knife sharp enough to shave my beard clean & easily.
Maybe I need to vary the angle or degrees?

Thanks!,

are you leaving it in the moonlight? moonlight can dull knives.

i've heard of people who leave their knives in pyramid boxes to keep them sharp :)

if you use the wrong box, it will actually cause rust!

okay, j/k... but a knife sitting out without being used getting duller? that doesn't seem possible to me.

LoL! I keep it in cloth because I threw the sheath away, I hated that thing! It rattled,
& after looking inside (the very day I got it) I could tell it'd ruin the edge. No, I use it alot--battoning, splitting kindling, shaving wood, cutting rope, & the like. After I posted
here, I worked with the edge again. Tried different angles. It's shaving sharp now, I hope
it'll hold. I won't strop it on my boots, & will try a belt instead. It may have been the boots, I usually stropped the edge on the side of my boot after honing & testing the edge. Worked for all my other knives.

LoL! I can even THROW it accurately up to ten ft. It's a little light for throwing, but it
gets decent penetration in a crossbow target for it's weight. :D. I guess the same methods don't work for all grinds & steels. Thanks for the replies though. :) LoL--the ONLY time my Bk-11 sat in a box or around without use, was while it was being shipped! :D

There are tons of threads on this, Beckers and Esee's...etc. are NOT throwing knives.

Do it enough and your going to break it.

If you want to throw blades around go buy a throwing knife.
