I can't stop my 440V Native from rusting

I bought a Native in 440V a few months ago and I like it a lot. My only problem is that it seems to develop rust specks on it after only a few days, no matter what I do. I've tried tuf cloth, but it seems to come off after a day or so and have no effect. I don't live in a very humid area, and I wipe the knife down whenever I use it.

Any ideas?

P.S. Is it possible that a bad heat treating or some such is causing this? If it is, I think I'll go get another Native and blunt 1/8th an inch of the blade on this one to have it be legal everywhere

One of my customers has a problem with his 440V Military rusting. He also has trouble with his other knives rusting.
Seems he has a sweat that is rather severe on his knives, as the cheaper ones rust in fingerprints.
He now uses car wax to protect them, but rennaisance wax or White Lightning would probably be better.

Interesting this.

Of my Spyderco knives, the only one that gave me any trouble was/is a Endura 98 in ATS-55. I treat it with MSTCloth and it still rusts like the devil!

My only other blades to give me any trouble were very high carbon and anything with a GBFinish. However I recieved a Ka Bar D2 folder from Ka Bar a few weeks ago and the thumb disc area had a finger print of rust. It was literaly a rust patern in the shape of a finger print! The only other knife that had this was a n12 opinel. Both times not down to me. Some people have VERY corrosive sweat and it does a number on steel. Once before my old D2 Ka Bar folder rusted slightly in the same place as well. This is with a coating of Tuf Cloth as well! I used a gun polish and about 40 mins rubbing to remove the rust and have given it a week in a thick coat of Militec-1 to stabalise the steel and nulify any remaining rust. I will clean it down and then apply lashings of Marine Sentry Tuf Cloth! Man I need to tighten the allen pivot on this new knife though... it has a bit of blade play

I had the same problem with my ATS-55 Merlin--speckled w/rust every 3-4 days during summer, despite using Tuf-Cloth--my guess is the amount of exposed blade when it was closed--after going over it with 0000 steel wool & oil for the 3rd time in 2 weeks, I sold it.

My Delica & Rookie, both ATS-55, have not had the same problem. I wish Sal would go back to GIN-1/G-2 for general use. I never had anything like the sharpening or rust problems with it that I do with ATS-55 (or ATS-34, for that matter).

Oddly, my Rookie (bought used) is & stays scary sharp with minimal work on a Meyerco Sharpen-it. My Delica is good enough for government work but nowhere near as sharp new or since, & I don't think the Rookie was reprofiled by its former owner.

Try the Marine Tuff-Cloth.
It was made for use in salt water environments and should work for you.
All my non-stainless blades get this treatment and it keeps the rust at bay pretty well, even on next-to-the-skin neck knives.

I'm one of those guys with the acidic sweat. I mostly just polish the blade every now and then, and wipe it off on my pants or shirt-tail every time I use it. Keeps the rust under control on semi-stainless steels.

Misque: Tuf-Cloth was meant to offset salty environments, not acidic ones. I routinely ruin colored T-shirts within 2-3 months given the composition of my sweat.

But thanks for thinking of us!

My spydercard always rusts

and my dozen other spyderco's do not

. Rather strange because I believe the spydercard is AUS6 which should be quite rust resitant. My navigator (Gin1) carried daily (inside waistband) for almost 2 years is still rustfree.
I occasionally use (marine) tuffcloth.

Titanium won't rust from sweat, neither will Talonite. Seriously. Not a chance.

One idea would be to buy a Tom Mayo TNT, or any other maker that does titanium handles and will do Talonite/Stellite.

Just gotta ante up the bucks for the seriously good $#!+.

Man, what are you guys eating?!

I never considered acidic sweat when I made the suggestion. I hope ya'll find something that will work for ya.

The Spydercard has a finish which is much more susceptible to rust.I think this is due to the microscopic craters and edges created by the finish.
I have numerous other knives with a similar finish and they all require more maintenance to keep rust free.

Here is a little update. I was inspecting my stored Native II yesterday and noticed 2 small brown marks on the blade. Now it has been about 6 months since I last looked at it, but I decided to after another post on this forum! Well the two marks were rust... DOH! Even with a double thick coat of MSTC the blade was marked... DAMN! Well I spent 20 mins with a gun cleaning paste and the marks were still there, hmmm so I used a fine profile to scrape the marks and realised the rust was gone, but 2 indentations were left in the steel. The rust had pitted into the lovely steel and eaten it. AHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO

How could I let this happen? The rust must have been munching away for months... NOT GOOD. I am ashamed for letting this happen. How will my Spyderco knives forgive me?

I suppose I figure 10a and Marine Tuf Cloth=sure protection from rust. I was wrong. MSTC is not the final word on protection, it does work, but I think it does not work quite as well as is claimed.

Somewhere I have been to a gun site where an individual did extensive rust testing with a bunch of products, including products designed to prevent rust in marine applications. The clear winner of this test was Break Free CLP, it kept a steel nail covered with salt spray rust free for something like a week. If I find the site again I will post it, it seemed like a well run test.

Cutler34 : yep bead-blasting = rust-pockets ; I wonder why not more coatings are used on blades (they do not always have to be black)
RickdelM : I am interested in that comparison

Misque: Some years ago there was a women's antiperspirant commercial that showed the acid level of sweat being worse for women than men--I don't believe it for a second.

However, individual biological tolerances & responses will vary.

Hi Elper. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Sorry you are having a problem.

If none of the above suggestions offer any assistance, you can send it to us for a "look/see" on heat treat.

Update: rusting stopped.

I tried some Breakfree CLP on the blade, and it seems to have stopped the rust. I plan to get some Marine Tuff-cloth pretty soon - that might work even better.

Thanks for all the help.

P.S. I think I'll get a new Native anyway - that's one great knife
