I can't understand the pricing on some mid techs...

not sure if the term midtech is appropriate, the knife in question is a rather large outdoor/hacking knife. for the sake of simplicity you can transfer the € values straight to dollar, as this is more about the relation of the prices...

now, the blade itself out of 80crv2 steel is 150€, fair enough, hugh slab of steel, tanto grind, saw cut into the back full tang. the blades are cut from steel no forged and they produce batches of the blanks (hence i would consider the mid tech).
finish up to k400 is included, handfinish is 80€ extra, coating as well. you could also order it in damascus which kind of defeats the purpose of the blade, but oh well.

canvas micarta or g10 handles +20€... sounds alright, right? this is just the material, here comes the kick:
handle finish:
rock/texture +130€
sanded +180€
polished (wood or bone) +200€ (okay, i get that, polishing takes a lot of effort etc)

then there are sheath options which are also quite overpriced etc...

now, i understand that the maker can charge whatever he feels like and that quality comes at a price, what i can't wrap my head around is the fact that the handle costs more than the blade itself and how this pricing compares to the price many makers around here are able and willing to offer.

yes, work costs are a factor which drives prices up, however, those scales are most certainly not handmade, but milled and probably only finished by hand if at all.
it is not a maker from the forum but a local one from germany. and while i can attest to the quality of their blades some folks (myself included) think that there is something wrong with the pricing.

It's pretty clear the maker doesn't like working with those materials so if a customer insists on them they'll have to pay through the nose.

Happens all the time.
