I've liked the looks of the 124, but never bought one. They aren't exactly cheap, and I do0n't have any need for a large fixed blade. But still I like the looks. And then you guys go posting all those pictures of 124 last Sunday. So I went looking to see what was in the bay and found this one. It arrived today.

It looks like someone tried to sharpen it with a grinder, but the damage wasn't to awful. The sheath is a bit rough, and I think missing a piece, but I'm not sure exactly what it supposed to look like. The handle is micarta, and there is no date code. So am I correct in thinking this was made in 1981 or earlier, and that would mean 440C steel?

O.B.

Yes. Pre 1981 and probably 440C (I think it was in 1981 they started to transition over to 425M steel. I don't know if some models got 425M sooner.)
I ain't one of them, but someone who can date the knife by the grip spacers will no doubt chime in. (hopefully)

Nice score! S/He cleaned up great. :)

Nice job. It’s a great knife to carry and use. Your sheath is missing the belt loop. I’m not a fan of that style sheath anyway. I’d order a new one from Buck. The current 124 comes with the best factory sheath I’ve ever used.

Of course Makael Makael could make you a custom one too.

I love making sheaths for the 124. Im on stall mode now. I put my back out this week, my doctor is only doing video chat so thats out for now. So anyway if one is needed I will need a little more time.

Ouch.
I had messed mine up a few years back.
I got one of those inversion tables, and that thing really helped.
Worked so good I sold it 'cause I didn't need it anymore......?
Seriously, it did help.
Take care buddy.

What does the backside of the current buck sheath look like. Looking at the pictures of it on Buck's website, it looks very similar to the one I have. But they only show the front. I assume the belt loop is different, but they don't show the backside. I'm going to make a new sheath, I'm just trying to figure out how I want it. I've been looking at the sheath thread getting ideas.

AC4B6489-FB74-4383-BC73-E670B5114E68.jpeg Your sheath is folded like a taco stitched on one side. AFAIK the current one is made of separate pieces and stitched all the way around. It doesn’t rattle like the taco one does.

Thanks. I was looking at the retention strap design, and completely missed the stitching up the spine side. I can understand the part about it rattling now that you mention it, because mine does rattle. The belt loop picture is helpful too.

I like that sheath a lot. Nice job. Adding the pouch was a good idea. Makael Makael did mine. It’s a joy to carry.

Thanks. Your sheath was where I got the idea. I thought about doing a bigger pouch for a knife. I may still some time. When I molded the pouch I did one of both. If I do a sheath with the knife pouch , my goal will be to size it so that it will fit a 110, a 112, or a large trapper.
