I've been looking around at different options for an all-around fixed blade that I can really put to work. I looked at some production knives, then at some customs, but I kept thinking back to an old thread I saw about the HI R-10 knife. So I emailed Auntie and sure enough, she had some in stock. I ordered one. I can't wait for it to get here. I will post some pics when it does. I plan on putting this thing to good use.

Shipped the R-10 today.
Thank you

Wow that was fast! My R-10 came in today and it is a beauty. Now I just need to find some stuff to cut up.

The elusive "one tool" option. This was my view a while back and many people have designed their blades to be tough little workhorses like the R-10. The R-10 looks like a really nice heavy-duty wood working knife.
Although you are not suppose to chop or split wood with a small knife, you use an axe or saw for that (ref: wildernessoutfitters). But due to this "one tool" view many full-tang knives and heavy bladed small knives are appearing more and more. A lot of folks like them for emergency use like if you somehow lose your pack and all you have is that small survival blade on you, and so on.

But these days after gaining knowledge from forums like HI's and experience in the field I prefer the multitool option, that is:
1 small knife, 3to 4 inch
2 big knife, 10 to 12 inch Kukri or other like a Machete, Golok, Bolo, etc.
3 a saw (or axe).

Maybe add a SAK in there too (or similar tool). It all depends on you purpose or if your camping for one (1) day, a week, or longer.
What do you think?

Costarica,

I am very much of the "more is more" philosophy. Having more knives around means you are more likely to have the right tool for the job.

I had some time today to try out the R-10. I put a new convex edge on it last night with my worksharp and it is super sharp. It sliced up some paper, chopped a palm frond, and stripped bark from a stick with no problems.

That's one sharp edged knife. Looks convexed which means it is really sharp. If you put coats of Tung Oil on the handle slabs it will last a couple of generations .

Really nice. I love my R-10 and have been putting it through hard use for many years. What a nice style of useful and beautiful knife.
