Greetings.

The handle cracked the other day. It was really bad all the way down to the but so I chisled off the handle and took off all the brass. Now that I have it down to just the blade I want to put a wood handle on it but I dont want to put the brass back on, and I dont want to have the but plate set up. Anyway. its got the tang that has no holes. . Can I drilll 2 holes in the tang so I cant put a handle on it? Will the tang crack because of the holes?

All replies are very much appreciated.

You might try a handle with a hole drilled in it, and fill with epoxy, tap the tang end into the wood.

I don't know how narrow your tang is. The tang near the bolster is wider and has been pinned before. I put a pin in a 20" Village AK.

Do a search on handles for more, or wait for the woodchucks to arrive.

what kind of epoxy do you reccomend? So your saying I make 2 sides of handle, file in the shape of the stick tang, and glue them to the tang?

Thannks for the help

you'd only need one pin and a 1/8" diameter pin is plenty. Drilling a hole that small is easy and won't cause structural damage to your tang. Locate it about 1-1.5" in from the bolster area.

you can use off-the-shelf epoxy and it will be just fine.

Welcome, by the way. Tell us more about yourself. Own any other khukuris?

I only have one Khuk because thats all I need for backpacking and camping. I use it for shelter making and anything I can think of, H I is making some great stuff and I'm amazed at how ****in strong this thing is. But I would not reccomend bone handles. It smelled like rotten ass when I chizled it off.
So back to the handle discussion. Where is the bolster area? And should I use a 2 piece hanle or 1? Which would work better?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but one is enough as Dan pointed out.

Will the tang crack because of the holes?

No.

Send pix of finished project if possible.

if you have a stick tang.....use one piece of wood. Drill a hole, stick it in the hole with some epoxy. Drill the pin (measure twice) afterwards. Set the pin with some epoxy and you'll be good to go.

The bolster is the piece of metal/brass/etc. that is at the front of the handle.

I'm with Howard and Mark...for that Khuk I wouldn't bother with the pins. The notches and epoxy would do fine.

thanks for all the help. I'm almost done I just have to stain the handle and put everything together. Pics are coming soon Bill and say hello to Reno for me. I used to live there.

Its been almost 2 months since I was on this forum and its a shock to see that Uncle Bill and Rusty died so close together. This was the last time Bill replied. May they be well. I wanted to show this finished photo to you all because I'm finished working on it. I hope you can see it Bill. Thanks for all the help you guys. I'm glad we can follow in their footsteps. You can email the pics to the address in my profile and I'll post them for you.

Very nice!:) Did the change in balance affect the quality power of chopping much?

Very nice. Truly one of a kind.

Please let us know what you think of the handle shape after using it for a while.

Very cool, I like.

Interested in effect on chopping too, looks like you'd still be able to use sweet spot, but would have to adjust position/swing from that you'd use with a normal khuk handle. Not saying that'd be a bad thing, just different.

Also, let us know what wood, how you treated it, what you used to work it, etc. :)
