I've been hitting the local estate sales this past month. It's a buyers market. Last week they had two very old, big money, estates up for auction. Stuff that was untouched from the 1900's got hauled out. Anyways, I ended up with this stuff. I really only inteneded to get the BSA hatchet as I have a growing collection of scout knives, but the rest just needed a decent home.

I don't know much about these, so if you've got some knowledge to share I'd appreciate it.

First the hatchets:

This is the head of the BSA. It's fairly ligt, and strangely the only one the headis loose on. I think I can fix this without any visable work, which I want to do since this is all original.

This is the larger Plumb. It's got the shath, and is the oly one that was fairly clean.

This is the most interesting (to me). It was totally covered in grease and muck that had solidified. Nothing could be seen of the brand on the head. Cleaned up with just a little hot water and degreaser and it's a Plumb. But it's not stamped, it features raised markings including the year 1914.

Now the Axes:

The double bit is a Zenith ( a brand I don't know) witha beautiful stamping. It need to be rehandled and have the edges cleaned but looks good to me.

This Plumb is fairly light, 3-4 lbs but in nice shape. The guys ho had these took good care of his tools at one time.

This True Temper seems mor modern, but it's far and away the heaviest of the bunch, weighing more than the double bit even. I'd guess the head is 6-7 lbs. Using this for an hour or two would wear me out.

Any info you may have on these gratefully received.

Nice pieces!

The two hatchets on the top pics are known here as some kind of "carpenters hatchets". The little carves (I don´t really know the word, sorry) on the head is used to remove nails from timbers, or boards.

The double bit axe is a really fine looking piece. I think the axes should be rehafted for more safety.

Kind regards
Andi

nice ones.
the Plumb and the U.S. have typical Plumb handles. the shape of the pommel is the clue

all good

Nice pieces. Your Plumb hatchet is a Plumb 1944 WW2 service hathcet. Nice find. That Zenith Axe - great find there too.
