I actually used the fish scaler yesterday to scale some fish for dinner. This was one implement that I thought was a complete waste on my Swisschamp. I justified it's usefullness by thinking of it as a "ruler". Yesterday my son and I did some fishing. Usually with catch and release, but I thought it would be fun to show him how to clean some fish, and prepare them for dinner. Not having done so it a long time, I seem to have lost my scaler. I could have used a spoon or something, but since I was carrying the Swisschamp, I thought I'd give it a try. I also used the main blade to clean the fish (Blue Gill). It made short work out of the fish we prepared. Got to say, it gave me a new outlook on this implement, and helped provide a pretty tasty meal. Now if I could just get the fish smell off of my Swisschamp. Fortunately I have two.:)

Nice SAKtivity! ;)

To get the fish smell out, soak your SC (with the implements open) in a pot of warm water + dish soap. Then rinse it and let air dry.

You can just apply 3-in-1 or mineral oil on the joints if needed.

I'm impressed! with the scaler and you ;)
very cool father and son activity.

Well done. That's definitely a proper father and son activity.

If you are going to use one to prepare supper, if it's not covered in fish slime, the saw makes a decent, if small, bread knife. And don't forget about the can and bottle openers .

I used the fish scaler on my Swisschamp for that purpose once when it was still new, but not since. Cleanup was quite a challenge on site, although no problem once I got home. Since then I found the large blade works as well or better for scaling, and with less mess than the dedicated implement. However, the scaler is one of my most used implements, not only for the ruler, but as a probe for examining or picking up things I can't or don't want to touch with my fingers. It also makes a good fork for olives and pickles, after thorough cleaning, of course :D and has been used to pick (keyless) door locks.

Keeping an open mind increases your SAK's versatility. Vic calls it a fish scaler, but I think of it as a long, double pointed thingy. A lot of SAK tools would get more use if they weren't named and users just matched them to the job at hand.

I'll give that a try. I didn't allow it to soak and air dry, I just wiped it clean and dried it.

I appreciate everyones comments, and I'll try to remember this implement the next time I need to pick something up, or I need a improvised fork (I'll make sure to soak it first though).:)

A long time ago I actually used the fish scaler to open the door lock of my old Mazda. I left the keys in the car, so I gave the scaler a try before calling a locksmith.

I actually found that the sissor on my Micra is the best tool to open up snow crab legs - it's a bit messy to put back into your pocket - but - there should be a "restroom" near by!
Peace
revvie!

Something fishy here! Hehhehheh. Glad it worked as Blue Gil are some fine eating fish!
