Y'know, I didn't really care about knife steels until I joined here ;). I read that the steel used for the knives on my Leatherman Wave new design were 420HC. Now, I've got, in addition to my EDC's, a Benchmade Nimravus Cub in my center console, a Cold Steel Bushman and a CS Kukri machete in my cargo area, so a multi tool without super steel isn't going to make me or break me. But, I've jumped on the super steel bandwagon, and just have to have the 154CM blade steel of the LM Charge.

I've noticed that the Charge Ti has scissors, and the Charge Xti does not. I already have a Juice with scissors in my truck, and if I decide to keep it, my Wave with scissors. Should I go for the Ti or the Xti? Do I really need that 154CM? I use my multitools, the Wave for opening quarts of oil, cutting up rags, tightening up screws on whatever, when I don't feel like opening up my tool box. The Juice I usually just put on my belt and use when needed, but leave in the truck for convenience. I just sold off most of my collection, and want to keep it down to what I need. I'm covered for multi tools and SAK's, I would like more, but I can't afford more. I really want either the Charge Ti or Xti, but do I really need it? Does that 154CM make a difference? LM going to market a Wave with higher grade steels?

I think you're discovering that every multi that comes out has something different from the ones before it...the reason we all end up with half a dozen or more. Whether it be steel type or the configuration of implements, there are numerous combinations available. Just keep buying and see what you end up liking best:D

I've got both Wave and Charge, I like Charge more because everything locks, not just knife and saw blades. It also has a clip and went with me on occasion when I forgot my EDC at home. It has a place in my car door. I always have micra on my keyring and Juice XE6 in my backpack so that takes care of scissors, hence my charge is xTi model.

That said, you don't really need to spend more money on Charge, Wave is a great tool.

154CM will hold an edge longer than 420HC, but it wouldn't be enough for me to dump the Wave for a Charge Ti or Xti. Keeping up with new steels and new handgun calibers is a game for people with more money than me :).

I have the PST (orginal) and a Wave II (and a micra, if that counts). To me, the blade steel on the multi tools is pretty irrelevant because I carry several folders with me. I got the Wave II for it's locking and being able to get tools like the saw and serrated blade from the outside. Like cabron50, I just couldn't justify moving up past that. Now that I've had the Wave for a month or so, I have found a couple of annoying things about it. I hate that little screwdriver, and I really miss the little screwdriver on my PST. That's why I got my Micra. The scissors aren't anywhere close to the Micra. Despite this, I still like my Wave over my PST, and my PST is there as a backup in my Maxpedition. Looks like I'm starting a collection of multi-tools:) Well, why not. I collect folders and flashlights, why not multi-tools....

Now about that Swisstool:D

I have the Charge Ti, and though the 154cm i excellent, I could easily do without. The only difference is that you need to sharpen it less often. Compared to my early Leatherman tools, I only need to sharpen my Charge half the times (approx). So I guess that's your motive, if any. Is it worth only sharpening your multitool every other time - if yes - buy the Charge. If no - forget it. Personally I WOULD pay the extra amount of money for the Charge if I was buying a high-end multitool like the Charge or the Wave, but I would never buy the Charge if I already owned the Wave.

Hope that helps :)
