Hello, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is James and I am a knife nut. But you can call me MrWoodsWalker because that's what I do whenever I get the chance. I don't really want treatment or a recovery plan. I just want to learn more about knives and share the excitement of fine cutlery with follow enthusiasts.

I became interested in knives at an early age, maybe about 7 years old when my father gave me a camping knife with fork, spoon, can opener and several other tools. I used this multi-tool on Boy Scout camping trips in the days when people were not afraid to let Boy Scouts have knives. Then, every time I needed a special purpose knife for hunting, fishing, electrical work or exploring, I searched for what I thought would be the best tool for the task and bought it.

True to form, I never sold or lost knives, I just made sure I had a knife or multi-tool where ever I thought it would be needed (glove box, hunting pack, tackle box, tool box, pocket, briefcase, wife's car) etc.

For the first time in my life, I actually lost a knife while on a deer hunting trip in Alabama last month. I was deeply aggrieved over the loss of my Schrade 1Elk Jim Zumbo fixed blade. However, I took solace in the knowledge that it was never my favorite knife nor was it particularly high in quality and it cost me only about $60. I just hate to lose anything. I had planned to use that knife as part of my emergency car kit because I have better hunting knives for the field and the integrated saw did not work well, anyway.

The loss of that knife prompted me to think of all of the knives and cutting tools that I have owned throughout my life and to gather up as many of them as I could. I searched my basement, garage and turned my house upside down to find all of the knives that I owned.

I didn't realize that I owned so many knives! There were more than a hundred and I made a list of them so I wouldn't have to go through that exercise again. I'm still not convinced that I have listed them all. They just keep turning up. I must be some kind of nut! What is this a knife outlet?

There's my Normark folding fillet knife that I keep in my tackle box. My Gerber multi-tool from my briefcase, and four Schrade Tough tools that I keep in various places for convenience. My infamous Buck 120 that nearly severed my thumb when I tried to learn how to catch it from the air. My throwing knives that I use to hunt small game. My throwing tomahawk. My Parker-Edwards hunting knife, my Kline electrician's knife and my Gerber hatchet and my Smith & Wesson hatchet/knife combo. Not to mention my various pocket knives and cutting tools that I use for my carpentry and electronics hobbies or the "survival" knives that I stash in various places.

I never intended to be a knife collector and I don't display knives in the sense of a showcase or display cabinet like some people. Lord knows (and my wife knows) that my spaces are too cluttered and I have too many hobbies already. I just use knives and I see each of my knives as a tool that I can use to get something done.

Many of my knives have been with me for a long time and some of them were bought when I didn't have much disposable income and I bought the best that I could afford, but not the absolute best. Now that I have been working most of my life and I have managed to put a few bucks away, I'm more interested in the finer things in life. Finer coffee, finer guns, finer tools and finer knives. That's why I'm here. I found this forum while surfing for the ideal all-purpose survival oriented fixed blade knife.

I have looked at hundreds of knives, but I'm still not convinced that I have found it. Frustrated, the engineer in me began to dream up and I began to draw up my concept of the perfect tool for my purposes. Now, I unwittingly began a new hobby because I want to build this thing that I dreamed up.

What better than to embark on a new hobby with those who share my enthusiasm and who know more about it than I? Especially since so many of the knife enthusiasts here are so willing to share knowledge, I hope to learn as much as possible and contribute to the dialog to the best of my ability.

P.S. I took a digital picture to show some of my favorite knives and blade tools, but I don't know how to post it here. I'm looking forward to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. That was a good post....could've been me writing it (if I was a better writer and less inhibited to admit my wife knows all my hobbies) :D

Welcome to the forum. Great place to learn, share your experiences, etc.
To post a picture, upload the image file to a host such as http://www.imageshack.us/ and then put the link to the picture in the
