I traded into a BM42 a little while ago. I mainly got it to trade or sale at another time. A friend at work has a couple of cheap Bali's and was showing what he has learned. I started playing around a little and next thing I know I have the BM42 out. So much for getting rid of it. Now I have to get some less expensive Bali's to practice with. At this point, I spend more time picking up the knife than opening or closing it. I have made enough progress to really start enjoying myself. While I was practicing, I found myself thinking, who cares about actually using one, I'm having too much fun trying to learn the different techniques.

Ha!

Hey Dirk, welcome to our collective obsession. I think you're going to enjoy the heck out of it.

But, I have to ask......... why would you even consider getting a cheap knife to practice with??

Believe me when I say you'll be nothing but disappointed after handling the model 42.

The only reason I want a cheaper Bali, is so I can dull the blade and not worry about slicing my hands up. I just spent a couple weeks recovering from a nice cut I managed to inflict on myself from my new Chinook. The BM42 is extremely sharp and I don't want to either dull the blade or get cut by it, at least not until I am working on something beyond basics.

By the way, I know where there is a BM42 for about $125. I think it is partially serrated. I don't have the money to get it, but if anyone is interested I can pick it up for you.

just put some tape on it, I've found that electricians tape is nice and thick and the blade doesn't cut through like it does with other tape I've used. I wouldn't want to dull it either, though some of the knives from BM are already dull

I suggest you buy two bali's. That way you can practice with one and have a nice perfect one for "special occasions"

or have one for practice and one for regular carry (if your using two, then carry the fresh one on the side of the hand that you usually use)

two BM42s are on my christmas list; one with a standard edge, one with a combo edge. that and two concealex sheaths. then i'll really be in business. and if I only get one, my birthday is seven days away!

I cant wait till christmas

When I get a few more money problems straightened out, I will see about a 2nd 42 or a 3rd. I like to have multiples of my favorite models.

I did pick up a cheap Bali to practice with. I dulled the blade so I would not spill any of my blood. Plus I can drop it and not be overly concerned.

I spend about equal time with the cheap and the 42. The 42 I am using for techniques I am feeling pretty confident with.
