Gotta love that original haft on a Walters. It just went for $81 on the bay.

Green paint is still on the head! Pic below of Montreal pattern axes being assembled are from Toronto Star Canadian Weekly Aug 1965

It wasn't me.

300, can you put a date on those nob ended Walter's hafts?

I love finding those painted heads, if it is old paint they are always so well preserved. If it is new paint they are hiding something.

Hafts were becoming rather crude (ie simplified and thicker) by the 1960s so I'm guessing early 1950s for the one pictured. Walters had retooled over to closed die forming during the late 1940s which has me believe would also be the origin of Montreal pattern.

Below is the "pulpwood" (2 1/4 lb) Montreal pattern that I have, with it's Walters sheath. The original owner bought it new in 1968. But the head is black on this one.
