I was lurking on Bugei's forum, and discovered that James Williams and Co. are working with CRKT, and they will produce their Hissatsu knife. I am sure many a knife nut remembers this knife.

I think the general sentiment was that the knife looked cool, but the sheath needed work, and the price for ATS-34, molded handle and crappy sheath was way too much to ask. I look forward to seeing that James Williams and Bugei can come up with in collaboration with CRKT.

OH...MY...GAWD!
Why on Earth would they wanna collab on that loser of a knife? Well, one good thing about CRKT is I doubt they'll take on that TOTAL bullsh*t ad campaign Ancient Edge tried to hock their Hissatsu with.

Did they ever come back after they were sent packin from the Forum? I still get a giggle at that crap they tried to unload here.:)

If they did away with the zytel sheath crap that would be a nice thing.
As with the steel, I hope they at least use AUS8. They aren't that terrible with knives. I still like the companion that I bought of you, Crayola ;)

Hey Calyth! I see you even dressed up that knife with a Normak sheath too... way to go.

Misque, I agree that the ad campaign behind that knife was... well... quite over the top. though Ancient Edge certainly didn't invent the hype campaign. Cold Steel are masters at that art! And personally, I find that a lot of the advertising around Busse/Swamp RatKnives (Is that the company?) puts me off. The knives may be fine, but the ads just seem to push me away.

Anyways, yes, the ads sucked, and yes, I think the price was off. but personally, I like the blade shape. Traditionally, it is called a Osoraku-Zukuri, and was invented when a smith tried saving the remnants of a sword. Hence, you get the long "tip" area, and the short "body." If CRKT can make a decent sheath with it, keep the same lines, and have decent steel, then you'll have a nice knife. Oh, and that all depends on keepin the price down. If anything, a more traditionally looking tanto from CRKT will add some nice choice to the other inexpensive tanto offerings out there, like SOG's Tsunami and Cold Steel's Kobun/Oyabun lines. But like all things, we'll see when the knives actually come out.

I always liked the looks of that knife. I was even considering purchasing one until I found out the price. Way to much for the quality of the knife.

Hopefully CRKT will do something a little more upscale with this knife. I would have no problem with a price of $100.00 - $150.00 for a quality version of this knife with a good sheath. CRKT should be able to use very good materials and keep the knife in that price range.

*Edited to fix a typo.

One thing I would liek to add..

The first 100 (IIRC) of that knife ws hand ground by Bob Engnath. I think that those blades are well worth the price asked for.

Anyone seen a pic of this new CRKT? Is there a pic of the original custom online?

*Yeah I really liked the look of the knife. The Osoraku sugata is really cool looking and not that common in actual Nihonto. I hope they use AUS8 at the very least. True that the design may have had its origins in the recycling of a Nambokucho style blade tip (O-Kissaki) but I have read that it was also a compromise between the typical cutting design of Hira-zukuri and that of the Yoroi-doshi or "Armor Piercing" design. So you get pointy with cutting ability.

Problem I see with this design is it being totally specialized for one use, and it's questionable if it's the best for the job.

It wouldn't be a bad thing if it were a shorter concealable version with maybe a ring-guard.

tallwingedgoat,

I agree, it is a specialized piece of equipment. If I were one of the High Speed, Low Drag tupes of people I'd probably be buying a Wally Hayes Tac 1 knife. It can serve as a weapon if needed, but otherwise it is a window prying, rope cutting, wood hacking tool. The Hissatsu is a pure fighter.

But as a knife nut who likes fighters, well, me likes the design! I dunno why I am so excited about this. But who cares! Yippee! Knives rule

I would be interested in any review of this knife.
I think there are plenty of other nice fixed blades CRKT could collaborate on with a maker.
Why this one?
The thing has no guard, and for a knife as mission specific as this one appears to be, I would think a guard would be mucho importante.

I definately would like to see some real life knife testing done on this piece.

imagine what they could have done if they had instead collaborated with a maker like blackwood and used real kydex. that would be a knife i would buy.

Head over to the Outdoor Edge forum....they do have an upcoming collaboration with Blackwood....oughta be real nice.

Cool design. I think that CRKT can do it right. I've always liked their knives in the past. I have to agree that some of their sheaths are less than perfect, but overall they make some nice quality pieces.
