Hey! -

There's a light on in the JSP forum! Someone must be home!

Why they're so cool and valuable -

James puts an immense amount of thought into the "special" products, and then executes the designs beautifully. They not only work, they work WELL. They make great backups, and are easy to bring into many situations where standard implements wouldn't get in the door.

My V-Gar, carried in it's pouch as a lanyard on my camera or phone, has whizzed through MANY patdowns/security stations. Same with my CKB-Alpha knife in it's beautiful checkbook.

As for using them, this is the place to be! If you do a search, there's even a forum-composed "manual" of V-Gar techniques.

Frac: I have been in trouble here myself for expressing my opinions on pricing, (and I also haven't seen any traffic here since I stirred up that bees nest with some Don guy)but I DO have to agree with Brian on the methodology of the less-blatant items they sell: The current political winds have blown in the favor of making it harder and harder for an individual to legally protect himself, and some of these "covert" items fit the bill quite well.

When I go buy a new vehicle...I don't bitch because they don't offer driving lessons...nor do I question their pricing methods...hmmmm...

Ah...at the mere whisper of a criticism in price, Mr. Wiz rears his head. Troglodytes...

I am not complaining about the lack of "driving lessons" .... but I did notice that my new Brunton 8099 compass came with some clear instructions and that even my new car had an owner's manual. This is a case of a lot of people excited about some stuff I guess mainly is used for self defense and is very covert -- Now exactly how I go from interested to enthused is not at all clear.

I guess I'll check on the posts!

frac,
I own 4 handmade pieces made by J.S.P. and can attest to their craftsmanship. I too have looked at the website that is maintained by JSP and wondered about the applicability of some of the items offered there. I have been involved in martial arts for years, and weapons are an integral part of that training. Most of the items used in MA weapons training such as the sai, bo, kama, 3 section staff, etc, came from items used by farmers and common people after the ban of edged weapons. Many everyday items can be turned into lethal weapons. Even a rolled up magazine in the porper hands. I have no firsthand personal knowledge of Mr. Piorek, but understand he has a background in martial arts also. Liability is the catch word of the day, regarding anything remotely lethal (Such as edged and concealled self defense items.)We have today a society full of parasites and preditors that like nothing better then to blame others for their bungled attempts at plying their trade. If the items on the BladeRigger website had details posted on the uses of the items offered, or even suggested uses, it would only be a short time (IMHO) before some slime trailing slug (or his attorney) blamed(et al:sued)Bladerigger and Mr. Piorek for said slugs use of a garotte on some poor elderly woman while robbing her home!

It is truely a sad time we live in I know... But one only has to look at the headlines to be convinced of this. While I cannot speak for JSP, I can only assume that because of the very nature of the product offered, Mr. Piorek may feel that those interested in such items, should have a firsthand understanding of their potential lethal use or some training in the MA for their application. More importantly, the techniques and circumstances under which they can be used as self defense tools. As with any "self defense" weapon or system, one has to be knowledgable enough to know when and how to employe the weapon or MA system. And the mindset to do it without reservation, hesitation, or emotion. Anything less, would only give your aggressor an opportunity to to take the weapon away from you, and use that very weapon against you.

As far as JSP COST vs VALUE, that alone could be debated for hours on end. I for one believe that any product that I rely on daily to protect mine and my families lives, is an area of NO COMPROMISE. The debate rages on in the gun world over what caliber is the best suited for personal protection, the debate will go on as to which edged weapon is the best to carry. My personal philosophy is the largest caliber I can conceal (.45acp) and the most expensive I can afford!

If you were allowed to select, and strap on a $80.00 parachute vs. a $2500.00 parachute, knowing full well in advance that you were going to have to jump out of a plane, I am sure the $2500.00 chute would be your choice! If, as I have felt, is the case with many visitors on the forums, one is simply looking at the knives for decoration, or investment, there are lots of fine makers out there that probably fit the bill better then a JSP original. And that decision should be left to the individual.

That's my 2 cents......

Well...your two pennies you chucked into the discussion were not only refreshing and needed, they were telling, worth many times their weight in gold.

There are those that snipe at Craftsman like James, probably a pallet of ammunition has been fired at Ernest Emerson through a keyboard...still these two men make ends meet and are a success at their chosen profession...why?

What is it that drives the demand? Because if you can answer that, then you know why they are not cheap...because of the demand, right? Supply & demand...

The Collectors are the group that usually have the bucks, and the demand goes through the roof when something gets hot.

My best friend is a local "DOC" here in my home town. He is blessed with a very successful practice and is interested in ONLY CUSTOM folders and in particular, AUTO's. He spends at least $3200.00+ each for the knives he collects (and he has literally a dining room full) and goes to EVERY major custom knife show. And he NEVER carries one of these beautes. Many of the knives he has are or were primere pieces at these shows.

My point is, he enjoys the knives he owns, every bit as much as I enjoy the knives I own. The difference is, I can carry mine and actually not worry to much if it gets used. He primarily enjoys looking at his through glass display cases. He thinks the knives I carry are inexpensive, not cheap mind you, but inexpensive to what he is prepared and able to spend. He has no formal training in MA and would prefer not to rely on a knife for personal protection, (choosing a Wilson Combat .45 we do agree on that! ) His "yardstick" for measuring a knifes value is different then mine.

Everyone has a different criteria for choosing a knife for their use. I see a lot of Spyderco's on the forums at $60.00 to $120.00. And if that is your cup of tea, great. Obviously everyone can't afford $500.00+ for a knife that you will (hopefully) never have to test under the most extreme circumstances. My suggestion still, is to get the absolute best knife you can afford, and become the best you can be in using it. In my humble opinion (and obviously many others because of the demand) the price Mr. Piorek charges is not unreasonable considering the quality of the product and the craftsmanship employed to create it. I feel JSP has tried to address the "cost" issue by creating a line of knives from his shop that are "Semi-Custom Production" peices, still under his quality control standards and still allow a larger group to enjoy a JSP knife.

I would have "reared my head earlier", Don, except for two reasons: 1) I have too been grinding knives to fill orders (some of which I can directly attribute to you for I received a LOT of mails after your last tizzy)....the slam you posted above was TOTALLY uncalled for....I was actually praising JSP for his production of covert weapons in this politicially-correct-gone-silly society...and 2)there really has been no traffic here in this forum. The rest of the posters have made perfect sense in their correct assment of why he doesn't publish "how-tos" of his products (if you need to know how you don't need it)I DO feel his prices are high and his turn-around times are slow in the age where a lot of great grinders are producing blades that are VERY well suited to self defense and have great grind lines and finishes....(but his carry and deployment systems are great).HOWEVER...I applaud him as a capitalist if he can get those prices and get his wait-lists filled up...it shows that his TOTAL systems have produced a great following....Please, in the future, just respond to the actual post and don't slam others.....Bryn Reynolds.....

Excuse me BladeWiz, the following applies....

#1 I could care less how many orders you received after our last go around.

#2 I could care less if you like me, or if other people like me...my Friends are few, loyal and known to me.

#3 Don't start accusing me of SLAMS when you come in here and say "some Don guy," and toss something out. In other words, don't slap someone then cry like a bitch when you get slapped back. Now, add something positive for a change, leave me alone, don't come back unless you have something to add besides some real or imagined B.S. I sincerely hope this post causes you to be flooded with orders, then maybe you will spend your time grinding and working on things, rather then coming in here and busting balls and sniping. You don't like what I have to say? Contact Spark directly. I won't apologize, he can remove me if I am out of line...however, it is obvious to me that you are simply a transparent sniper...anything else?

Look....I was merely answering the first post and actually complementing the covert nature of some bladerigger products....and the also second post that said there hadn't been much traffic here...I'm sorry I called you "Don" and that I had forgotten your last name.

C'mon, guys. Consider that a virtual handshake and make up
smile.gif

Myself, call me stoopid, but if bladerigger gear is so expensive and has such a long waiting list, some folks must think it's pretty special. Personally, I'd love to have some of the gear, not for covert purposes but for the excellence of the design for utility purposes. But the supply and demand curves intersect a little too high over my desire point, for the time being.

I second that HJK! Add in to your comment about JSP stuff "plain good looking", and you have it nailed! I'm kicking myself for not ordering from James back when he first started (and was priced accordingly - even tho the actual product looked pretty much the same)!

...and third-ed. Kinda reminds me of the time when my uncle was horsing around with my older brother; my uncle tussled my brother's hair, my brother snap-kicked him in the nuts. Maybe someone did snip (not snipe) but the response was not equivalent. But then again, who said life had to be fair?

paranoid.....

I'll bet your brother never dozed off around your uncle did he..... Unk might have turned him into your older sister!!

This made me LMAO. Your too funny!

That one made my night, Paranoid!..Just imagining your poor uncle doubling over!..LOL! (BTW: I didn't get the "sniper" thing either...although I would have liked to think "back in the day" my ghillie suit actually DID make me transparent!)....Have a good night guys!....Bryn

Sorry for off-topic response

Maxon, actually my uncle was never that affectionate with my brother ever again. My brother was a chubby bugger but it was surprising how fast he could move.

Bladewiz, the snip and snipe thing was to illustrate appropriate response. The snip is to cut with scissors to snipe is to terminate with extreme prejudice with a Barret .50. If I bumped into someone without saying a, "pardon me", an inappropriate response would be for that person to palm strike me in the head, with a follow up elbow strike, half turn to the right with hammerfist to the groin...oh I'm talking too much again. Anyway FYI on the snip versus snipe thing.

BTW Don't mention ghillie suits or someone will think you're GUNNER.

Forgive me, I have been very busy.

The sniper comment was just what it appeared to be, someone who snipes with a keyboard, not bullets nor rifle...pretty easy to figure out and a rather common Internet term used for trollers, James Keating calls them, "Sharpshooters."

I think part of the problem lies in the fact that I have a temper and I apparently have someone who likes to needle me.

You may indeed call me Don, I'm not an arrogant bastard, but when you say, "Some Don guy," and the name is plainly on this Forum, I have to ask myself a couple questions, can the person read or are they just trying to be a smartass? Since it is obvious you can read BladeWiz, I figured you were being a smartass.

This, for me, has gone on long enough, I have a Son who is about to turn 4, I do not need another one right now. Please, please, whatever you do...be nice. You and I have went round and round in e-mails before with transparent threats of lawsuits and all that crap (and I do not want to say crap either) and I was not alone in my interpretation of that.

Please scroll up and take my offer seriously. You and I could sit down and have a Michelob or perhaps some Japanese Beer (and that is better then I ever imagined it would be) I don't drink often, but I like to have 2 or 3 with a friend. We could sit down and do that, you can come here and add all manner of topics and responses to various weaponry or ways they can be carried or deployed. Sneaky stuff...real world stuff...or we could continue on this path to the ****house that leads nowhere.

Now, that's an olive branch if I've ever seen one. Thanks, Don, for demonstrating how to deal honourably.
