If anyone can understand the purpose of the shape of this knife, please let me know. Thanks.

Funny you ask this, as I was just wondering that today myself!!

As far as I can make it out, the bottom is a regular knife edge, and the top looks like a real good chopper type edge. I suspect that smoke jumpers would need a chopper so this blade offers that and a knife edge too. This is my guess anyways!

I think Cray is correct. Some heavy duty knives, such as the Kit Carson U2 Dive knives, have a sharpened false edge. This is used for heavy duty tasks (Kit said that a number of people used the false edge for cutting pallette strapping). This saves the main edge, which is often ground to a more shallow angle.

While I never have done any smokejumps, I have jumped in the Military. I would agree with both Crayola and WW, this knife looks like it would help a smokejumper get out of a tree. Have you ever seen any of their other gear they jump with? The face mask(looks like a fencers mask) and the chest/neck protector. Those heros need all the protection they can get.

If you are interested you should check the liner thickness before you buy. I saw one at a local show and the thing looked paper thin.
