I don't know if this is possible...

A few months ago I purchased a small plain lefty sebenza, and it's the best thing since sliced bread (no pun intended). But it's plain, and I hav a habit of customizing the things I buy. So here's my question: is it possible to get it machined with a pattern like the Line Drive or a unique graphic? I realize that it will not be able to be anodized, since it's already beadblasted, but this is perfectly acceptable with me. This is a working knife, not one to be babied.

I'd be willing to pay the money to get it done, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one, am I?

No, you're not the only one.

I recently contacted CRK to inquire about the possibility of having a simple design cut into the front side of a plain Sebenza. The answer I got was that this could indeed be done. CRK would do a sandblasted finish over the design which would give it a silver contrast look. Price for the service would be $55.00 per knife.

Thanks for the reply, Steven. If you don't mind me asking, is there any limit on what kind of pattern you can get cut into the handle, and did the knife then have an appearance similar to the NICA tanto sebenza? If it's just as durable as the regular finish, I just might go ahead and do this.

It seems that types of patterns are limited a bit. I am a Dealer and buy direct and I am working on a "Unique" large lefty for myself... so far both of my artwork I sent in, I was told neither would do. I am finishing a 3rd and rather simple one now. I think the others could be done easy, but maybe their CAD guy has a tough program or something. My art was rather basic I thought.

Aabeen-

I was only interested in having a very simple pattern done. As you can see by Jon's reply there must be some limitation on how much can be done on the plain Sebbies. I suggest that you send your question about a specific design to CRK for the definitive answer. Bridget is really great to deal with.

I was actually thinking wanting to get a CGG design on my knife, like Line Drive. I personally don't think that this would be a problem, since it's a standard pattern that they sell. But maybe Reeve could tell me more.

This would be more appealing to me than a fully anodized one, since I wouldn't be quite as hesitant to use it and possibly scratch the anodization off. We can't have that, now can we?

What would the possible waiting time on this be?

thanks for all your help,

Don't like them plain? Don't like the wood? Don't like the Decorated ones?

There are talented folks out there that will "engrave" what you want on you knife....

But keep in mind.....when you alter a CRK you run the risk of voiding the CRK warranty!

Don't worry about using it! Remember, you can always send it back in a year or two and have it looking NEW again! GREAT service again, from the folks at Chris Reeve Knives.

I could be wrong but Aabeen is right in that the anodizing cannot be redone, just the matte finnish or the polish. I believe it has been stated before that the decorateds cannot be brought back to as new as with the plains..... maybe we could get a confirmation before guys buy the decorated under the wrong impression?

Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone have any scans of Sebbies that have simple designs engraved into the plain handles? I'm wondering what my options are, and if I can get an existing pattern done (a CGG).

What would the waiting time be? Can anyone harbor a guess?

cheers

Are you sure about the warrenty being voided? I mean we are talking about a service being performed by the maker of the knife. Any thoughts from CRK ? this is something i would be interested in. Also what is the turnaround time frame on this ?

Aabeen,

Thanks for the inquiry. This is an option that is available for the Plain Sebenza, with one limitation. The Computer Generated Graphics are only available as you see them in our literature (with the anodizing). They are not available as a silver contrast look. So that means that the design put onto your Sebenza handle would be along the lines of a Unique Graphic as a silver contrast.

When customers send in designs for their Sebenzas, these are considered Unique Graphics. These designs are not applied through CAD/CAM technology. Scott, our workshop foreman, machines these designs freehand, so to speak, using a special milling machine. If the design is too complex, it cannot be duplicated. This is due to the limitations of the milling machine. If we accept the design, please be aware that it will not be exact but it will be a fairly reasonable representation.

Cost is $55.00 and the turnaround time, 4 to 6 weeks. Don't hesitate to call if you all have any further questions.

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

thanks for the reply, it cleared up the questions that I had. If I have a design can I just email it to you, or do you want a hard copy via snail mail?

It'd be hard to give up my sebbie for 4-6 weeks. I guess I'll just have to buy a few more so I won't feel deprived.

thanks again, now I have to go be creative and design something...
