I don't like neck knives!!

Well maybe the thread title caught your attention? Well, it's true, or rather, more accurately, I don't like to wear knives or anything else, for that matter, around my neck, except for maybe Rachel McAdams, Halle Berry, etc.

Some time ago, an over-generous forum member gifted me with an Izula and I have to say, what an excellent little knife. Because of this, and the spirit of the gift, I felt remiss in not carrying it more. So, with this in mind, I've been doing a little experimenting.

First (no it's not Brad Pitt) a quick picture. - (please excuse picture quality, need to build a light box).

Where is the damn Izula, you ask?

Well, let's remove the shirt.

Here you see it in it's prototype pocket rig. Prototype because I'm still experimenting, but I thought I would solicit any suggestions, that might be forthcoming. Because it's light weight, it rides exceptionally well, just the way you see it.

However, with my finely crafted beer gut, and the various and sundry items hanging on my belt (Vic Spirit, Fenix L2D, Doan mag bar, spare keys) and a Benchmade AFCK and Spyderco Manix in left and right pockets, respectively, I find the need to wear suspenders. Although the pocket rig works perfectly well without, the addition of the suspenders make it even more secure.

And if you don't wear a t-shirt? Remember, this is a prototype. In the completed rig, the non-glossy (black) side of the leather would face out, removing the 'shine'.

Here's a close up of the prototype. It's made out of heavy leather, that I had used for another project, hence an unnecessary hole or two.

One other benefit of this rig, is that you can change it from shirt to jacket, to whatever by simply lifting it out of the pocket. Personally, even without further improvements, I am quite pleased with how this works. It's the light weight of the Izula, that makes this possible.

So that's it. Your thoughts.

Interesting, I like where you're going with that. I've never liked carrying stuff off of my neck either.

That is the first type of that setup that Ive seen. It's actually pretty cool and would work if not a neck carry fan. I'm all with you on Rachel McAdams!!!

Interesting idea. You might want to pick up a piece of kydex and try it with that. It would be lighter and more rigid. My only concern would be the pocket tearing out. However, you could easily have the pockets of several t-shirts reinforced with some extra stitching.

I can see the issue with things around the neck that aren't "break-a-way", and that would definitely be easier to relocate discretely than one on a mercharness.

The kydex is an interesting idea. The leather, however, is thick enough it doesn't flex much. As far as tearing the pocket out, there is virtually no weight involved and when I remove the knife, I push against the sheath with my thumb, so there's no stress on the pocket, because of it.

I should mention that I previously used this with a Gerber Mk I and sheath, in an inside jacket pocket, which was considerably heavier than the Izula.

I really like the ingenuity of this one. I'd like to see your finished design whenever you get it finalized.

Very logical. I'm not a "around the necker" per say myself, with the Izula being the only exception. The Izula fits perfectly between my man-boobs, so I'll not be changing, but I like your design Doc! Well done!

With the retention of the factory sheath, it seems like with the force required to unsheath the knife, you would either risk ripping your pocket, or pulling the assembly out of your pocket.....

I like this. Gives some ideas to experiment with. I have a necker (not an Izula) that I wear with a light breakaway chain. But this would be a very good way to wear it with a jacket or even when wearing a suit. Dont stone me but I'm in a suit and tie several times a week. Suit and tie kind of make the necker uncomfortable. I like your concept here.

Hey GP, I am glad you are enoying that Izula! I wouldn't call it a generous gift, it was just a way of thanking you for all the help you gave me in my quest of learning wild edibles and such.

Now on to that pocket protector rig. I like it, but I don't have many t shirts with pockets in it. When I carry my Izula it is just in my front pocket. I am still working on the beer gut, when it gets as well crafted as yours I will definately buy some pocketed t-shirts; as I can see the gut impeding acess to my front pockets....

:p

This is very interesting, maybe attatch it on with a couple of chicago screws to make it a stronger connection between the two, I don't think it would add much weight...

This is a very original idea, good job!

interesting idea. if you moved the knot to a better location, it should lay flatter against your chest.

Hi Doc

I too don't like wearing the iz for neck carry, so I'm persisting with G clip and jeans pocket carry. Howewever, I'm liking the look of your 'shirt pocket sheath set up' (I was going to say 'nice pocket rig', but the juvenile in me couldn't do that with a straight face...:o:D).

Unsheathing looks ok, how is it working when resheathing - does it push up out of the pocket or is there enough angle on it?

Thanks, everyone, for all the good comments.

It's no problem. When unsheathing the knife, I pull on the handle and push against the sheath with my thumb, as I do with all kydex equipped knives, so there really is no stress on the pocket.

When I used this with the Gerber, I put it in the inside pocket of a jacket, such as a suit coat and it worked very well. Even with the Gerber there was no imprint.

GS, you never did tell me if 'Bite Me' was also an American term.

The Chicago screws would probably work very well and if/when I get my hands on some, I will definitely try it. Having said that, the 550 tied with a reef knot is quite secure. It really has to be tried to appreciate just how solid everything is.

It probably would, although I don't notice it sticking out and the above mentioned Chicago screws should take care of it, in any case.

You're right, it would push up out of the pocket because of the positive lock of the sheath, but I hold the sheath with the other hand when resheathing - no problem.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time and making the effort to offer your suggestions (except for tonym  :D).

Very cool idea Doc - that is some original thinking. That is the anti-geek pocket protector!
