Several years ago when I got my Tenacious I pretty easily fell in love. Its still my favorite knife to use, and I've spent a lot of time with it. At one point I sat down and started sketching a knife that I though could improve upon the Tenacious in small areas. This included things like the wire clip, premium steel, choil, and after some researching I realized I was pretty much thinking of a Sage. The Sage topped my dreams by having those sexy CF scales, and made me want it pretty bad. I finally got to handle one passing through CO, and fell in love(infatuation?) with it even more. Recently I've done some odd jobs and saved up enough for as a treat to myself, and have been carrying it ever since.

Its a great knife, and I cant really point out anything wrong with it. However, I don't feel like I'm in love with it anymore, and I think that any knife I spend this much on should be something I have no qualms with. I think the biggest detractor for me is it doesn't flip open quite as firmly as I'd like it to. It feels great in the hand, it looks amazing, and has wonderful steel, but I can't stand how much effort I have to put into making it swing open smoothly. I think part of it may be that its tip up, and I normally use the clip to get a good hold on the knife while really flicking it with the thumb. You could probably say I need to practice and I could change up my style a little bit, but I don't want to have to. I just want the knife to be perfect for me and I think I've realized its not. I would liken this to dating your high school crush and then getting turned off when you realize shes bigoted.

Does this happen to many people? What do you do? I do really like the knife, but if I like a knife that's 1/3 the cost more than It wasn't the wonderful purchase I thought it was. Should I try trading it? Is it possible to mod it so its tip down? Or should I ignore my gut, and put it with it because for the most part its a nice knife?

If your main issue is that the Sage isn't opening as smoothly as your Tenacious, I would remove the blade and washers on the Sage and smooth out all the surfaces, lube, and reassemble. My bet is that will make a huge difference. However, if the problem is ergonomic then the Sage may not be for you. I love my Sage; at it's price point I think the Sage offers great functionality, tremendous value and impressive style, but the Sage may not be your "cup of tea". If that's the case perhaps you can return it, or sell it and move on.

How long you had it? When I first got the Manix 2 XL...I hated it. Tool some effort to deploy & cannot closed one handed...I thought i will be reselling it. Then one week later, I swap the pocket clip, or what ever reason it may be, my hand just adapt to the blade. I deploy with a wrist flick...Bam! Opens smooth...then pinch the bearing lock, flick it close...by the third week...man I love this MXL2....now when I handle my BM axis lock/thumb stud opener...even easier than before since my fingers built strength handling the beefy MXL...

BTW: which locking mechanism on you Sage? Is it the bolt lock? That works like an axis lock?

Surprising. Sage 1 is one of my favorite knives of all time, irrespective of price. Smooth to open, sharp, very comfortable, and light. Perfect knife.

Yes, Sage 3 is the bolt lock....so liner lock...then it's all Ergos & deployment of the blade....

I just got the Tenacious two days ago. It's just a blade I must have hearing so many good review being bed bang for the buck. It is so smooth, lock up tight & blade is dead centered. Prior to that I had the Manix 2 & MXL....

I think it may take time to get used to any new blade. That's why there is risk buying online.
