I Don't Mean To Tick Anyone Off

As I am new here I have noticed a few people seem to get angry if you post a subject similar to one in the past. For instance Misko seems to get grief on this subject as he stated in his most expensive knives owned. I've gone through done searches and it seems to me that the best way to get a response is to post a new topic. As we are in a ever changing market I like to have a fresh opinion and I don't see the harm in posting subjects more than once.
Am I missing something here does it mess up the searches or do people just hate seeing the same subject. If it does not hurt anything, why complain? if there replying to tell the person to check for some good material on the same subject, cool. But why get bent out of shape just because it's the same subject. Maybe I'm just reading some of these the wrong way but when I see people say that this has been posted before and to use the search and then give no personal opinion on the question. This gives me the imppresion they just want to complain and not help out. Opinions on this matter would be appreciated. Maybe you can help us newbies out. Thanks

Don't read Anything into the whole Misko debacle. That had little to do with his questions having been asked before. It had everything to do with his forum demeanor.

Some questions do come up over and over again. That is the nature of a public forum like this. But many of us try to answer these questions or to refer folks to previous threads by doing the search ourselves and posting the link. I agree that a curt 'use the search function' reply is not very helpful, or even polite.

Ask, and you shall receive. What you receive does depend to some extent on What you ask, How you ask your question, and Who cares to respond.

Well, first off, I'd say that the problems Misko ran into had a lot more to do with his comportment and demeanor than his choice of topics. But that's just one man's opinion. To get to the heart of your question, however, most of the time people are referred to the search feature here, it is simply because we don't want that individual to miss out on the wealth of information that is stored in past threads. In many cases the search feature is recommended simply because the topic was addressed only days or weeks ago. But you're absolutely right that new knife models are being introduced all the time, and that's why a majority of us will offer our up-to-date opinions even when we suggest someone might benefit from using the search feature. Bottom line- I wouldn't judge the civility of the members of this forum based solely on reception that Misko received

Another newbie here. I must agree with Parcelsus, Misko is not getting grief for the questions asked but the attitude he has displayed and continues to display.
Otherwise ask away and prepare for a wealth of info, more than you could have ever dreamed of getting.
I love the wealth of info here and the variety of personalities and experience.
This place rocks!!!

I was'nt trying to defend or point the subject matter towards Misko's topic, just thought I'd use him as an example as it's obvious he has been told to use the search in the past.
Strider if I ticked you off, well I don't really care I just figured I'd get more opinions with the topic that I posted. Got your attention.

Some subjects come up and generate a huge amount of information. Like a recent neck knife thread for instance. It had a wealth of links, photos, mini-reviews, and makers comments that probably could not be duplicated with such detail. So sometimes when we say "use the search function", it is because that will probably yield the most info.

I also understand your feeling..... perhaps a dozen new neck knives have been developed since the aforementioned thread, and you would like the most up to date stuff. That is just fine too, and you will get some new responses as well.

The point that I am failing to make here is this: When you get advised by someone to use the search feature, don't take it personal..... use the search feature. You can only gain by doing so.

I have found that responding to,or even starting a post requires very careful planning for choices of words. With 8000+ readers, not everyone will interpret your meaning in the same way(although smilies smooth the rough edges).I have been "misread" before and made attempts to reclarify my meaning.Communication via speech is difficult enough...typing whats on your mind is even harder!

sigsauer, I am just about 100% certain that Bob (Strider) was just making an ironic comment. You did NOT upset him in any way. It was a joke. Jharden is correct. This is a very difficult medium. The written word has no intonation, or body language clues to help figure out someone's intent. Sometimes people say things to others that they know well that may seem mean, or harsh to others. But since they are friends, they understand each other.

Your interpretation of what happened to Misko in one thread is a good example. Search for Misko posts since last Friday. There are at least Five threads in which he acted very badly. He does not seem to be posting anymore. His last post was a profanity laden Kiss-Off. He misunderstood some of the comments that were made about his initial posts last week, and things went from bad to horrible really fast. If he had just slowed down a little, and not posted so emotionally, things would have been just fine. He had a friend (metal-demon) come over to BFC to see what he was complaining about in another forum. Metal-demon expected hostility, but instead received a very gracious welcome. Even Misko would do OK if he came back and tried a more laid back approach to this forum.

Posting good topics, making helpful responses, and maintaining one's dignity in this format can be very challenging. The best advice I can give is that if something someone wrote makes you angry, DO NOT post about it. Chances are you will feel differently in the morning. Give email a chance before lashing out or reacting. Misunderstandings are common here. Genuine ill-will is not.

There is a surprising amount of animosity towards new members here that i have not experianced on other forums.

The major prerequisite is not having the balls to tell all of us bastids here to go procreate with ourselves when we give each other some sh1t! And then, not having the good sense to laugh at ourselve when we screw up!

Hey sig:
I have been here about as long as anyone.
If it means anything at all ... I hate that Sh .... um ...I mean stuff.
"Hey stupid use the search"
First off its just plain rude. Second it is forgetting the fact that at one point almost everyone here had similar questions. Remember in grammer school when the teacher would instruct evryone to raise there hand and ask if there were any questions saying that if you had that question then chances are ten other kids in the room do as well and were afraid to ask. Same thing applies here.

Seen the same question asked that you have seen a thousand times before ..... ignore the thread. Damn sure is a lot to read here. I check in here three four times a day and still find plenty to look at and respond to.

Why WASTE TIME hitting the "Post reply button" wait for that page to load ... wait for your name and password to appear .... type a response such as " grrrr this is done to death .. die you ignorant bastid and while you are passing use the search feature .... then check the spelling .. then decide if you should include your signature line and then click reply ... wait for the confirmation screen and then be brought back to the thread in order to see your oh so informative response.

Well if Im going to go through all that I would like to think that I at least helped answer the damn question. Informing a new person of the wonders of search in order to get ADDITIONAL information is great. But in conjunction with an initial meaningful response to his question.

Sure there are some subjects I personally dont have the need to explore anymore. Can anyone say " Is maddog better than ..." I just dont read em or particapate.
My 2 cents

It's not as funny as Misko's threads but I am getting a lot of laughs out of this one!

We can't see how tall/short, fat, weird, bald, odd, or minstream you are. The only way we can evaluate who you are is by what you post. Maybe that is a good thing (just click on one of VG's links if you have any doubts

).

You have to be patient and excercise due respect. With 8K members we have trolls poping up every so often, so when a new member pops up, the first thing we want to know is whether it is just a troll. Once you get over that, then you are no longer a "newby".

Para was right I was only kidding."BUT" now I am ticked off since you had to go and use 3 tongue sticking out little stupid faces when I only used 1. Do a search and read up on using more then 1 stupid little face at the end of a post.

Thanks for the replies everyone, as I am new here and I find the info to be very helpfull. I plan to be spending allot of time in here and I just wanted to be sure of the proper manner of conduct. I was'nt sure if there was some serious reason that some people seem to get ticked off at others for little things like posting the same subject. Your replies have been helpful to me and hopefully other newbies. P.S. Strider, will you be my friend.
