Did you ever get caught up in an auction and bid on a knife? Then you have second thoughts and think, "I don't really want that!" Then you hope that there is a bigger fool than you who will outbid you? Share some of your auction buying strategies with us. :foot:

Had this same experience happen to me a couple of days ago. Guess you just have to really think about it before you bid, and pray someone wants it more than you before bidding is up. I guess you could always relist it and hope to break even, right?

:D :p ...LOL...Sounds like someone got caught up in the heat of the "hunt" for that special knife...LOL...That only happened to me once. It was for, believe it or not, a Parker AB-7 that someone had up for bids. The bid started out at $5.99 and I put that first bid in. Darned if it didn't sit at $5.99 for 5 days and 22 hours. It was a 6 day auction. All I know is that if I won, I'd have to go out in the snow, I was living in Wisconsin at the time, and get a money order for that knife. I didn't want any part of driving in that weather. Well...someone bid $6.49 for it and got that knife. I actually emailed a thank you to the person for out-bidding me...LOL...I haven't put a bid on a knife that I didn't want since that incident. What I do now is to ONLY put a bid in on something I want. I try to get a bid in early so that if anyone I know is also out there, they will see my bid. I also look for any bids, before mine, from people I know. That way I won't step on a friend's bid either. After I place that initial bid of mine, I'll watch to see where the bids go. If it reaches a point that I feel is not reasonable or within my means...I won't go any further. Otherwise I'll wait til the end and try to sneak one in under the clock. Sometimes it works and sometimes I get nailed by a "BOT" sniper. I'd rather do it myself actually. That's part of the fun of bidding I guess. Just be careful what you bid on...you may win it...LOL... :D

Well, I was the bigger fool that got a 560 instead of Chickentrax. He bid on something and posted that he didn't want it. I wanted a 560 so I bid on it.
So, I think that is a method...let peeps here know that you bid on something and if someone else wants it, they can go for it. Sometimes there is something that someone wants but misses it on the auction search. This is what happened in my case...I wanted the 560 but missed it until Chickentrax pointed it out.
Or, don't bid on it until it nears very close to the end. I try not to bid on something if one of our brethren here are going for it...but I don't know everyone yet. But if I see them out there it's hand's off...kind of like hitting on someone else's ol' lady...maybe worse!!!!

I did just buy a Chinese buck 300 series knife. As I was walking out of the store I knew I would be alot more happy with the good old US of A version, so I took it back unopened.

Nothing wrong with it, just personal preference.

Hi Porkchop3223, Here are two Ebay "I can't beleave I just did that".

1) My eldest son wanted to know how to use ebay. This was back when ebay still sold firearms and during my tutorial I inadvertently closed the bid and submitted it (force of habit). At the time that was a $550 mistake (the kind my wife just would not understand). I contacted the seller and explained the situation and they let me off the hook. No harm, no foul on this one.

2) In my quest to get a Buck 120, I found a buy it now for $20. In my excitement for this awesome deal; I did not read the text that clearly stated it was for a sheath only! I hit the buy it now and was the proud owner of an empty 120 sheath, As I did not yet own a 120 knife (still don't by the way, still looking) I had no need for the sheath. I contacted the seller and explained that I had made a mistake and did not want an empty 120 sheath. However, I would pay for it to ensure I did not get bad feed back. The seller was nice enough to let me out of the sale, and he taught me the humbling lesson of reading what's in the text before you bid. I still make this mistake every now and then!!!!!! That ebay stuff gets you caught up in the moment some times.

Soooo....... remember to read the fine print of the text every time, When in doubt ask the seller a question, and never get caught up in a bidding war (it's not worth it). When I place a bid on ebay, these are my simple rules. 1. decide the total amount I'm willing to pay for the item. 2. If at all possible Waite until the last few seconds of the auction to place your bid, 10 seconds or less! (this will keep you from getting into an emotional bidding war). 3. If you win great, if you loose start looking for the next item (another one will show up again), at least you did not over pay. Oh, and I wont bid against you guys....yet....well...not yet anyways.

One of the nicest knives I own was just like that. This was early in my eBay exposure. I was bidding on a pair of fancy 300s that I really wanted. I lost’m with just seconds to go and I was more disappointed than I would be today, having now had my share of disappointments on eBay. Anyway, I had a mild case of tunnel vision and I clicked on show sellers other items. There was a Weidmannsheil Hobo about to end. I bid on it and won it, about $100.00. Afterwards I realized I had gone a little mad there for a minute. The knife was really nice but it had elephant ivory scales and you are not supposed to be able to buy ivory in Canada because of elephants being endangered. I figured I would end up paying for a knife that I would never receive. As it turned out Customs must have never looked at the knife. I received it and it is one of the most elegant knives I own. I was more than a little bit lucky there.

More times than I can count, which is why anymore I jsut bid the most I'm willing to give and make a point of not being home when the auction ends.

I lose more auctions, but I save money!

Since my name was brought up here, I'll add my $.02...

You guys that are laying off auctions because you see someone else from here bidding on it...that's nuts!!! There's people from this Forum *selling* those knives!!! That 110 Mike got outbid on came from Joe Houser's private collection. By not bidding, you did Joe a disservice. And he's not the only one from here selling on eBay.

Hey - It's an auction!!! Bid on it!!!

I did want it...sort of...But I really, *really* wanted a 186, with accessories...I got cold feet, and wanted out...(I also didn't have any money in my account at the time!:D )

But I think I stumbled into a better deal for a 560...Time will tell... ;)

i agree with trax on first impulse and thought ...
however i also stop sometimes because i know the other bidding on it...
how do i decide ??????
well some times i am bidding live and if i see some one i know steadly going up i tend to not bid further as it seems that theey realy want it...
i know many like me that put in a bid as a way to watch it close untell i've made up my mind most bids like this fore me are $6.16 or 16.16...
if i am kinda of reasonably sure i want it i make bids ending in .88 cents ... as 88 hits my eye fast on scaning my ebay... if a "defeintly I DO want IT at a price X " is happening i am watching and have 3 windows with step bids and i fire them live some times i shoot my limit on one bid and hope the reserve in my bid makes it ...
on the thought of asking ...? i have asked some i have bid agenst how high or how bad they want it and no reply ,,, they seem to think i am Phising for the limit to bid agenst them were as i am extending the curtisy of NOT biding to my bottom-feeding-savageing price and thus makeing their bid unnessarly high... so i stoped that...
to each his own...

BUT reguardless:
Knowing who is behind the OTHER bid had changed my bidding a LOT ...
and it is hard as hell to defind that change ...

i DO snipe at times as i am sure all do but it is trubling to me as i get auction feaver and the "well its only 2 dollar more... " thing.. more then once i have open a package and gotten that "GOT YA!" felling in the pit of my ...

YES you have to read Fine print carefully and sort out what IS said and what is NOT said,,, care in reading "looks/ seems/ to me / almost/ minor/ 'Not a knife expert' is a real big flag/ fuzzy picts are also a flag ask for better shots or a return privlage in advance.... any time you see NO returns or like words beware again ...

Yeah Chickentrax, it was ME that brought your nic up. Meet me at the bleachers after school and we'll see who walks away with lunch money :D
Seriously, I was gonna post here that the 560 came in. Figure $55 isn't too bad, but what do I know? It has a "560" blade from 2001. No significant open wobble. Pretty nice.

BTW: Man! I was bummed that it didn't have an all TiAN blade!!!! I feel gyp'd!!! ;)

Thanks El Pollo...
Me.

Hey - It's an auction!!! Bid on it!!!
I like to see everyone including myself, get top dollar for knives they're selling on the bay, the forum, or a show;however, I like getting a good deal once in a while too! I can assure you guys if there's a knife I want,I'll get it. I have hundreds of knives, but when your addicted to blades....
I don't want to own every knife, but if there's a knife someone wants and they're a BF member or a BCCI member and they make it known they'd like to own a particular knife, I won't out bid them. If I'm running a bid, email me,I may back off, I don't recognize everyone on ebay from BF.

I think you got a good deal...Seriously, I thought it was heading to ~$70...

Just from watching eBay (what else is there???), I'm thinking $40 to $60 is average, with $50 being the median...[D'Oh!]...For a 560...

I probably should have stayed in the bidding... ;)

Thanks...it's my first 560. I'd like a 186 too...but man, those things are $$$.
The one on there now is close to $200 with almost two days left.

It's at $182 and has been for days now. I have a real suspision that it will go for much more before it is done. I'll bet the final bid is somewhere around $230! I'd love to have one of those 186's but I just can't justify it right now, particularly since I've got my eye on a few others. :D
