I always look at pictures of the xm18, and now the zt0550. i just dont understand why everyone likes that blade shape. it seems as though right below the spine there is a ridge that juts out. and the tip seems to be thicker. Could someone help explain this to me? I am really lost.

It makes the blade stronger for prying. It is made for hard use.

Thats about the size of it. Its designed as a hard use knife, ricks a fire fighter and is in the "knives are multi-purpose tools" school of thought. He expects people to pry and cut and hack with his knives and possibly use them to stab through windows tires etc.

I cant wait till the zero tolerance knife comes out, Thats alot of knife at an incredibly attractive price, its going to be THE hard use production knife if it performs as good as it looks  Other than karambits and multitools i havent carried a folder out of uniform in years, this may end that streak and get some pocket time with my H.E.S.T

The XM-18 was designed by a firefighter as a folding knife that can take the abuse of that job. If just cutting was wanted there are many better blade shapes. For a person like me, I would prefer a blade shape like a FFG Endura or a Sebenza. Those types are a much better EDC for me. I have a XM-18 also, it just does'nt see as much pocket time.
