I don't want to use such nice coated knives!

I traded some stuff around this week, and I have a new Scrapyard Dumpster Mutt and an Ontario TAK coming soon. I am going hiking this coming weekend, and first off I can't decide which knife fixed blade to bring (don't get me started on what backup fixed blade, folder, multi tool, and hatchet to bring)! I know from experience though, that I'm not going to want to use them for fear of wreaking the coating. I think I am in a mentality to keep my fixed blades in great shape for trading or selling (money is tight, and knives are the first thing to go lately). There is no question, just a stupid dilemma for someone so lucky as to have two new knives come in one week! Good news: I get to build fires with my new fire pistons!

Leave the knives at home.
Bring matches, lighter fluid, wax, and some popsicle sticks to start a fire....
ie, knives will be in new condition...

i've beat the crap out of my TAK and the coating still looks good......tough stuff. the TAK not a safe queen and is happiest when being used.

I too have the problem of not wanting to put a new knife through hard use. The solution? Either buy the knife slightly used or just put a scratch on it or something. It'll make it much easier on yourself. For best affects, let someone else do the deed for you.

I think I'll use the TAK and keep it forever, and keep the Dumpster Mutt in the safe. I was at first sad that it was 1095 and not D2, but now I'm excited after reading all the positive reports here during a search.

You said 1095 and D2 in the same sentence which is bound to start a feud.....but....either way...you'll be happy with the performance. I beat my TAK almost to the point of being abusive....why you ask? Because I can....because they are not expensive...and because the knife can take it. I find it very easy to reestablish a nice edge in a short amount of time which to me is a huge plus.
