I downloaded the new msn live messenger last night

Did you uninstall the old one first, if not, go back to a restore point and restore before the download. Then uninstall, download new. Try that. If all else fails, hit button forgot password and reset password. I have had problems switching over before and hope this helps.

Thanks for replying! I've tried resetting the password now, no luck. also, I've tried every method of opening system restore (including typing rstrui.exe into the run box) and it doesn't appear to be on this (vista) computer. Stumped now

Download Revo Uninstaller (free), it will find all the bits and pieces of your new messenger and use the original program to uninstall, it then finds the bits and pieces left in your registry and allows you to remove them also. When downloading the new messenger, make sure you use the advance install, unclick a bunch of options, (I forget all they try to install) but do the bare bones install, No on startup, no on desktop icon or tray icon, all these take up memory and I just don't like a program telling me what to do. Try again without all the bells and whistles.
Good Luck,
BTW: Revo is safe to use, much better than the control panel options.

I installed that revo uninstaller -it works great, thanks for the recommendation! Just as well, I used it several times!

Eventually I googled and found this site which links to earlier versions of messenger:

http://www.oldapps.com/msn_messenger.htm#about

I downloaded the immediately preceding version, successfully, then when I tried to sign in I was told I had to update to the latest version first. So I uninstalled again and tried installing the last version before they started putting "live" in the name. Got the same message. So I thought "what the heck" and clicked to download the update. Hey presto, it works now! :D
