I used Rit to dye some orange BK14 handles. I wanted some practice before trying to dye some handles for the big Beckers and I dont really like the orange handles.

My plan was to dye them brown. The only brown I found locally was dark brown.

They ended up black. Darker black than the black ones from Kabar. I took them out and checked them every 15 minutes for a while but I could still see orange in the middle,on top between the 2 bolt holes. It took about 3 hours before I could no longer see orange. By then they were black but I still like them better than orange.

Ideas for next time.

Find tan or light brown dye.

Use less dye in the mix.

I have a feeling using less might have gave me the lighter results I wanted. I wasn't really trying for light brown, I just wanted to be able to tell they were brown.

Try the new Rit formula made for plastic. Its called Rit Dye More. I will probably have order it online.

How I did this.

I used an old pan that was about ready for retirement.

Cleaned orange handles with alcohol then washed with dish soap and water.

1 cup water. 1/4 cup vinegar. 1/3 cup liquid rit dye.

Stir it up and bring to a boil stirring occasionally.

I turned off the burner, waited 5 seconds and put them in. I didn't know if they would melt or not but I read heat makes rit work better on plastic so I took a chance.

I repeated that once an hour for 3 hours before the orange was gone. They took the heat fine, were never soft and were not damaged.

BEFORE

The only orange handles I have left are on the BK14 I miniaturized.

I cant get photobucket to stop flipping my last picture over. I tried to re upload it, i tried going into edit and flipping it over. Its the right way until I hit the save button. I even tried to trick it and save it upside down...Nope it kept it upside down. HAHA oh well I give up.

Sometimes you need to rename the photo to something other than what you had it originally, after you make the edit to it, before re-uploading.

Thanks warrior. Glad you like them. You can see in that last pic they are a little darker black than the other ones.

Great tip you on the name change. I will remember that, thanks forgetting that to work.

No problem man. Turned out kick ass.

Wow Maus, I had no idea you could dye the plastic scales. Wouldn't even have thought to try. Mind blown. Excellent job man! Looking forward to see how they hold up over time.

Oh, and cool mods on your mini 14!

Wow, I didn't know that you could dye orange scales. I figured the dye wouldn't absorb into the plastic very well. Anyhow, it looks real good!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad you guys found this interesting.

Its pretty simple but if anyone wants to try it and has a question dont hesitate to ask.

Nice job Mauser, I'm going to try that on the full sized lime green scales. Thanks

That's what I want to do too.:thumbsup:

It will be interesting to see how well it holds up with use.

Hi ZZ

Besides getting some practice that's what I hope to learn from these orange ones. I will update this thread once I have used them for a while.
