I used Rit to dye some orange BK14 handles. I wanted some practice before trying to dye some handles for the big Beckers and I dont really like the orange handles.
My plan was to dye them brown. The only brown I found locally was dark brown.
They ended up black. Darker black than the black ones from Kabar. I took them out and checked them every 15 minutes for a while but I could still see orange in the middle,on top between the 2 bolt holes. It took about 3 hours before I could no longer see orange. By then they were black but I still like them better than orange.
Ideas for next time.
Find tan or light brown dye.
Use less dye in the mix.
I have a feeling using less might have gave me the lighter results I wanted. I wasn't really trying for light brown, I just wanted to be able to tell they were brown.
Try the new Rit formula made for plastic. Its called Rit Dye More. I will probably have order it online.
How I did this.
I used an old pan that was about ready for retirement.
Cleaned orange handles with alcohol then washed with dish soap and water.
1 cup water. 1/4 cup vinegar. 1/3 cup liquid rit dye.
Stir it up and bring to a boil stirring occasionally.
I turned off the burner, waited 5 seconds and put them in. I didn't know if they would melt or not but I read heat makes rit work better on plastic so I took a chance.
I repeated that once an hour for 3 hours before the orange was gone. They took the heat fine, were never soft and were not damaged.

The only orange handles I have left are on the BK14 I miniaturized.
