I took my CCW class this saturday and the instructor ownes a gun store and is LEO for years and teaches any number of classes related to LE and weapons. We were on break I and I asked him what blades he sold at his store. His answer was "none to speak of *long pause*.... i really don't like knives". Ok now after I caught my breath I was able to squeeze out "what the hell...? you mean you're not a knife guy or you're scared of them". I assumed his answer would be that he just didn't care much about them, but he said "No, I'm scared of them". I know he's looking at them as weapons and what they can do to a person, but I was still really suprised that he was scared of blades.

I posted my theory on the dislike of blades earlier. I didn't have enough proof, but I also felt more people were afraid of knives then guns. Becasue I know some gun people that are afraid of knives. I think it's because the seller has been cut by a knife before, and had the painful experience, but he's never been shot.

It's like disliking the dentist because you associcate the dentist with pain.

I guess. I remember reading your post on that.

That's very strange. I certainly wouldn't expect that from a CCW instructor. The guy must have had a really bad experience with knives at some point. Maybe he got cut or saw someone get cut and it freaked him out. I'm sure there's some kind of back story, though I wouldn't push him on it.

Some people have irrational fears or phobias that cause them to behave differently from what we think is normal. The mail carrier that comes to my building is absolutely terrified of dogs- she freaks out and becomes visibly distressed whenever she sees my dog, who is very small, cute and friendly- about as menacing as a chipmunk.

I've been cut enough times, you don't see me running away. If anything, you see me running towards your sharp pointy thing for a closer look.

I just don't understand that "logic".
How do these people cut anything ?
Does someone half do it for them? Are their meals pre-cut at a restraunt?
I suppose they can't distinguish a "kitchen knife" from a "weapon".

Ya I ran with scissors as a child too.:D
I have had to do some field surgery on my self from cuts that made others squeamish, but I still play with sharp objects.

Personally I associate the dentist with Marathon Man. :D

Part of a good CCW class should be a discussion about the fact that knives are "deadly weapons" and treated as such . The thought should never be "it's only a knife". LEOs also have to be aware that it's easy to hide a knife. Being "afraid of a knife " is paranoia .

Should someone that irrational be qualified to be teaching a CCW class???

It's obviously an emotional bias. Probably based on a complete lack of knowledge about them.

Some folks don't like spiders or snakes; those who want to get over it go to desensitizing classes where they can so used to them they handle them crawling up their arms, etc. But it doesn't happen overnight.

Gift this guy with a small SAK Executive and help him out.

he has a small leatherman. It couldn't cut butter though. He nearly fell over when he saw my BM710.

I can't even imagine a firearms instructor not liking or appreciating knives. I have taken many advanced firearms courses over the years, all my instructors carried folders. Very strange.

Did you say he was owning a gun-shop?

He doesn't think that they can be dangerous weapons too:D

He has ODD logic, bit like finding a vegetarian working in an abbatoir:eek:

Lots of appeal to CCW classes are fueled by irrational, emotionally driven fears. Gun/knife/self defense advocates are not necessarily any more rational than the general populace, despite what we may like to think of ourselves.

One of my teachers in high school was a target shooter, loved to chat about it with any of us who were interested to listen. One day while he was talking about an accident that'd almost happened at a shooting range from someone near him clumsily handling a gun, someone remarked something like "That's worse than the time I almost sliced my hand open in biology when I was fiddling with the scalpel." The teacher had an almost immediate physical reaction to that statement, like there was a shock sent through his body. Someone else asked him what was wrong and he said "Anything with a sharp edge like that really bothers me." We all thought it was odd, someone who used guns all the time being spooked by anything with a cutting edge, but if it's something psychological then who knows?
