Okay, I admit it. I've got Khukuri Lust- BAD... Years ago, I thought collecting guns was a "bad" habit to get into... (Settlement with my ex-wife "cured" me of that... Plucked like a chicken... :( ) Anyway, I've been bouncing around the H-I website, doing my reading here in Khukuridom, and I'm battered black and blue...

In looking for the "perfect" combat Khukuri to compliment my Chiruwa Ang Khola, and my two Khukuri House OIFKs, I've come up with a short list... And yes, I have looked at length and weight... Also blade shapes...

In the last twenty-four hours, I've dithered about Fox's Folly, the M-43, and the Ganga Ram Special (though I can't seem to find any info on the "Baby" GRS Villager...). In looking at these, I've noticed one thing- they're MASSIVE...

So, I'm going to go the "other" direction... Fast, sleek, and designed for combat, rather than hacking through tough jungle undergrowth. My Chiruwa Ang Khola in 16.5" should be able to "hack" that with no trouble...

Which of the following three types is the best for a combat designated knife?
Gelbu Special Number One 18", Chitlangi 18", or the Sirupati 18"? I'm looking for a knife that has F-A-S-T tip speed, presence, and a large "sweet spot." Are any or all of these full tanged? Sounds like a dumb question, but I honestly don't know... Have heard that there are some knives that aren't.

So, I THINK I'm narrowing down the field for my next H-I... Your answers could certainly help me on the road to my next "fix" for Khukuridom's incurable "disease..."

As always, Thanks, Gentlemen!

Carter

They are all full tanged. And to tell the truth, the three are real close anyway, individual differences made in forging and model varience will close the gap...to make it a coin toss. Pick the one that looks best to you.

I have always been able to get a good SWOOSH with my Kobras. They were designed to be swords first and khuks second. They come in 18, 20, and 25" lengths. My Kumar made 25" Kobra is massive. 33oz and flies through material. Honestly, i don't think there is anything that it CAN'T tackle, but if i break it, it's on me. HI does not cover kobra abuse. My favorite kobra (and favorite machete) is a 20.5" 20.5 oz Amtrak blade. I wouldn't cut anything greater than an 1 1/2" in diameter with it, but it is a lightsabre. I was using it to take out some dogwood saplings at my mother's. It was like and an anime movie. I'd swing my kobra with fury in a diagonal arch at a small tree. As soon as i finished my cut several small branches and a neatly severed trunk slid off to the ground. I didn't even feel the cut through the tree! Also, I'm about as much of a ninja as I am an opera singer. Besides trial and error cutting fundimentals, i'm a dummy. So, my pick is the Kobra. I like the simple lines of it. Great tip speed:)

Carter:

If you want a Khukuri designed for combat, I'd suggest the Malla.

It really, really is an unbelievably fast khuk.

The Malla is an overlooked khuk with many attributes. I keep mine for bumps in the night and light hiking duties.

Yep, there is something very business like about its lines...It just looks deadly.
Like I said in another thread about bears--it was the one that really wanted to come on the trip.

I have decided what I am gonna get as a fast Khuk !

An 18' Chitlangi.............fast enuf to bump out any bumps at nite.........

The three you mentioned really are more alike than different and any of those would work well as a "combat" khukuri. In fact, the differences between how each kami compared to another makes each model probably overlap some. I have Kobras (you didn't mention), GS's, Sirupates and a Chainpuri. If something goes bump in the night and I don't grab my Glock  , I'll probably grab an 18" Kobra that has been nicely convex sharpened and that sits near my bedside.

You can't go wrong with any of the three and you will want at least one of each eventually. I know that I am still looking for a large Chitlangi and a 21" Sirupate. They are like Lay's Potato chips...you can't stop at just one!

Either the Gelbu speciial, Chitlangi, or Sirupate should do great duty as a combat blade. The Sirupate is an oft overlooked style that can do double duty as a combat or utility blade. The Chitlangi is one of the most beautiful blades produced by HI and is certainly a martial blade. I think the Gelbu is what Palla (Yangdu's father) thinks is the perfect military blade.

Just to make things harder ;) consider the Chainpuri which is sometimes available. Mine is really scary. I catch it grinning at me with blood lust from time to time, as evidenced in this picture.

Carter..........I too am interested in a fast khuk...........

My choice (no.1) shall be a 18" chitlangi.........love the double fullers.......... ......but the Chit as I have seen are usually heavier than same size khuk like a sirupate........or chainpuri........(that may affect speed)

My (no.2) choice.............leanning towards a malla..........but it too is heavier I think............

:o

Hi Astrodata,

I think we're both thinking of something lighter, hence faster, than some of the "big boys." Notice the thinner blade profile, the longer blade... Maybe a better balanced blade overall... This means a faster transition speed from one target to another... It also means NOT a heavy chopper... The Gelbu Special number one, Chitlangi, Sirupate, and the Chainpuri are not the "standard" Khukuri shape... More like a cross between a Khukuri and a sword... Whatever, they SCREAM speed... Now, WHICH ONE? The Chainpuri is the more rare blade, and there are the slight differences between all of them... Sheeeeeeeesh... Even MORE the ping-pong ball...

Jeeeeeeeeeez, just looked at the Chainpuri on that link you provided, Astrodada! That's a loooooooong knife... That's a wee bit long for hanging from my main gauche... Maybe an 18" would be possible? I like the design, though... 10 out of 10 by Kumar? THAT's a definite contender... He's had great reviews...

So many choices... Whatever happened to a basic hamburger with Ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions? Gads... Well, I'll have to do some more heavy-duty thinking... (Where's the asprin?)

Take care, stay safe, and have fun...

Yes Carter that is indeed quite big and heavy............

But comparing the pic to ferguson's I think that fergu's is an 18 incher..........yeah mighty looking blade..............

Personally I think that the chitlangi......even though being heavier than a sirupate................might swing just as fast.........because with the bigger bell shape butt and fullers at the blade..........the balance is less forward.........so the speed is still there..........that has to be confirmed by someone with more experience............. :o

But.......hmm.......how does a malla swing ?? Munk said he kept one beside his bed.............. :)

I have a Chainpuri and a Chitlangi of similar size - about 19" or so. The Chainpuri (Sher) is lighter than the Chitlangi (Kumar). Both are fast and easy to maneuver. The Chitlangi is a great chopper, despite being relatively light - it has a wooden handle and is about 21- 1/2 oz, as I recall.

Both are beatiful knives - If I had to choose, I'd prefer the Chitlangi. I think that individual knives vary in weight - a Sirupati could be lighter or heavier than the Chitlangi. The Chitlangi feels lighter than the 19oz Chainpuri, despite more weight. It is probably my favorite Khukuri....

I like it more than a larger one -21 1/2" that I have by Kumar that is about 30 oz.
