I have got NOTHING in CPM 3V. I plan to remedy that. It will be a month or two, odd thing is - I like WANTING stuff more than HAVING stuff (weird, eh?). I have my 3V choice narrowed down to two knives but am not stuck on either and open to other ideas (other fixed blade ideas)

Cold Steel Recon Scout
Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII

Use? Probably nothing, honestly. It will get carried in the car as a "SHTF" tool or a SD weapon. Probably spend its sheltered life cutting 2 liter bottles and card board mailing tubes when I wanna play ninja or Sandbar. Other than that, it will probably open some boxes that my Ritter Hogue could have done just as easily. Maybe some food prep. If I need a "beater", I reach for an ESEE.

Any thing I should know about 3v? Especially in regards to how it performs in different blade shapes and thicknesses? The Mangun's main edge is hollow ground so it will be thinner behind the edge that the Recon Scout, chippy? Is there a particular length where you'd start to want a softer Steel?

Thanks.

Out of the two you listed, the Recon Scout would be my personal choice.

If someone asks, "Which one, A or B?", I always hate to be the guy who gives the, "You may want to look at C" recommendation. However, since it seems you're kinda' looking in the Cold Steel direction, I wanted to give a mention of the 3V SRK. Like much of the Cold Steel stuff, it represents a tremendous value, in my humble opinion.

If you're patient, there's a pretty large online Retailer that has great sales and clearance deals on the Cold Steel stuff. Beyond that, about three or four times a year, they offer a 20% to 25% coupon code, which is even applicable to their already low sale prices. In my years of buying knives, the savings has been unmatched.

3V is a wonderful steel. It's definitely one of my favorites for a medium-to-large fixie. In my experience with it, it easily takes and holds a great edge. It will rust or pit, but not easily. I have used my 3V Recon Scout and SRK, sometimes pretty stupidly, and have never experienced a chip. (*as far as I can remember)

Just my $0.02.

Happy hunting.

Hard to beat the CS recon scout in 3v nice deep belly, great flat grind and sharpened clip. I have one that I did a custom moran handle on.

I’m pretty sure a few of us found 3V knives tend to multiply, fast. You’ve got many option out there. Bradford 5.5 may be another good starting point. Cold steel does a good job with 3V from what I’ve read…

Post pics when you get something 👍👍

I opened this thread intending to recommend Bradford knives. I haven't gone bigger than the Guardian 4 because I already have the 6-8" range well covered (and, while I might have a thing for the larger knives, I've long since realized that 2.5-4" fixed blades are easier to carry & far more useful in my day to day.

I, too, would like to own a 3V knife. So I am making one of these for myself, one for a friend, and few extras. Plan is to double distal taper, i.e. blade and tang. Mine will have suretouch, of course. Maybe even make myself two, one plain edge and one serrated. You know, for science.

Respectfully Mr Mary,
Would you mind making a few of those please ( with micarta ). I would love a knife with those specs.
