This is a few years in the making...
I have always had a Mastiff in the collection, but I have always been hesitant to wail on one due to their rarity. I recently picked up a generation II Rat Mastiff (aka the Muddy Mastiff), and I felt compelled to use her! Man...its a hell of a knife!! The ergos aren't ideal for "choking up" on the blade for finer tasks IMHO, but I always carry either a folder or my trusty INFIcoot as an EDC.
In terms of chopping & heavier chores, the ergos are P-E-R-F-E-C-T. The sub-hilt handle is incredibly comfortable and provides for some additional leverage. Towards the end of a swing...you can snap at the wrist and really bite deep in to whatever it is you are chopping. It took me maybe 10 solid swings to take down a smaller tree.
The old school Swamp Rat coatings seem much more durable than coatings on my newer knives. I don't know if the Busse compound has used a different coating medium of late, but the muddy coat on my Mastiff is super slow to wear off; definitely a good thing. I split the same amount of wood with the Mastiff as I did with my FFBM when I first used her, and you can see the difference in coating wear in the last few pictures.
Well this is certainly one of my favorite choppers of all time, and a pleasure to beat on! I will be using her extensively over the summer and I will probably write a quick follow up after she is convexed. Thanks for having a look gentlemen! Have a fun & safe weekend
