For wilderness survival

1)4" Puukko
2)7" Leuko
3)Granforsbruk Wildlife Hatchet

What I like about the Nordic style knives is that they are so easy to sharpen and maintain in the field.

What would be your choices?

Custom 11" Bowie(G10 textured handles, SS guard, S30V blade)

Custom 4" Fixed blade(clip point, L6, in piggy back sheath on the 11" Bowie)

PCKS 110(BG-42)

BK&T PM

What I usually carry in the woods:

1. Victorinox Outrider

Now I have a Benchmade 806D2 AXIS AFCK, too.

If I thought the risk justified carrying the extra weight (longer trip, more remote location, etc.) I'd add a Sven Saw.

HI khukuri. . . .15" Ang Khola
Victorinox swisstool

. . .except i wanna change the swisstool or add another fixed skinning type blade.

Turkeyman,

The Leuko & Puukko are the basic Finnish knives sold by Ragweed Forge.

After the first sharpening and you get the edge bevel flat and straight, they can be free hand sharpened easier than any other style of knives I have ever seen.

Are these the ones you got?

Or did you get the stainless steel ones?

Thanks Backpacker, I agree with you about the ease of sharpening a Puukko. A big plus is where the thin blade gets really razor sharp if you want it that way.

Deletante,

Yes those are the ones, except I bought the seperate sheath models so I did not have to worry about loosing both of my knives together.

Thanks to Hoodoo & Oldjim I am a Nordic knive fan forever!!!!!!!!

BP,
Those look like three excellent choices, I can't think of a better combination.

Ragnar is an excellent dealer as well.

Can you provide a little moer detail on the performance of the lueku and pueko, compared to western style knives?

Eric,

These knives cut like crazy. IMHO they will out cut or cut with the best of Western knives. I have a Camillus Talon in 154CM, Dozier K2 & Dozier K6, these knives will cut as well or about as well as the Puukko or Leuko. The Doziers and Camillus well hold there edge longer, but they are much harder to field sharpen. The Nordic knives have such a wide single bevel, you can not mess up the angle and they are much less work to get razor sharp with only one of Ragnar's 1-1/4" x 4" diamond stones.

I was very worried about how they would hold up, but, you can batton them without damage. Western knives with a full tangs will out pry them, but, they well pry well enough for most wilderness tasks.

I was looking for a super knife that would not get dull and just could not find it. If you are out in the woods for any amount of time, you will have to sharpen your knife. IMHO this is the only way to go if teamed up with a Gransfors hatchet or ax.

This is just my opinion.

Hmm . . . I can't help thinking "what if" . . .

I think I'm going to get Leuku Puuko blades from Ragweed Forge and put Micarta or G10 handles on them.

It seems like you could get some super-steel stock and make G10 handled full-width tang versions of these knives through stock removal. Then it would be a matter of heat treating them to balance edge-holding and field sharpenability. I'm way out of my depth here, but I'm thinking of a modern field utility (rather than "custom") rendition of these traditional designs.
