Hello everyone!

After two months hard battle with my innerself I finally gave in and bought my first Bark River and it should arrive next week.

Bark River full tang Kephart green canvas micarta handles and A2 tool steel @ 58 HRC. I am going to make ultimate Bushcraft combo for me pairing this Kephart with Esee Izula (with micarta handles) and Small axe.

I'm big fan of spear points. I guess one reason as I am huge fan of SAK's. My only reason not to order was I wasn't sure about A2 steel but after members said it was good better in edge retention than my favorite fixed blade steel: 1095 High Carbon, I decided to pull trigger on it, especially I didn't saw it in BRKT website.

All the reviews I've seen have been very positive. I have no experience about Bark River knives but I've heard nothing but good about them. I'm not sure but I think I just killed my wallet...

You do realize they also make the Blackjack knives.

Bark River is one of the last great American knife companies so enjoy them while we can.

I did not knew that, now I know. Thank you. I concur, we should enjoy the products of these great companies who make their products with american pride and take pride of their skill and products.

From what little I know when Blackjack stoped making knives BarkRiver started making them for them but they changed the steel to A2 which was probably a better theng anyway.

Mike Stewart (from BRK&T) made the original BlackJack Knives until production was moved off-shore.

More reciently the new owners of the BlackJack line have had Mike make the "Classic Series" of knives at the BRK&T facility in Michigan.

I hear the old BlackJacks you do not sharpin them with a stone but you do like a old straight razor and run them againest a strap of leather to keep them sharp.

Mike Stewart makes Convex Blades,

...they all should be sharpened on strop blocks (not stones) if you wish to maintain the original profile/geometry,

...this includes the older BlackJacks as well as the new ones and of course Bark River Knives.

Big Mike

You poor naive bastid, you think you bought one Bark River, where in reality, you have entered into an addiction of infintesimal proportions that will suck your bank account drier than a good martini. :D:D

Kidding aside, that is a great choice, Bark River makes excellent knives and I'm sure you will be as pleased with your new Bark River knife as I am with (all) mine.

Enjoy the heck out of it.

Thanks KEvin, I was so affraid of that. I've opened 3 cans of worms in past month: Esee, Bark River and Custom's...

Good pick, Jamppa!

Now you need a strop/sharpening setup. Maybe something like this:

convex-02.jpg

Each board is MDF about 3"x11"x3/4", faced on each side with 8oz leather and sandpaper. The two pics are just the boards flipped over.

To sharpen my BRKT knives, I usually start at 1500 and fnish on 2000, then go to green and white strops. I've gone down as low as 320 to repair a badly knicked edge, but it's long, tedious, and laborious.

Thanks man! I got strop, green and black stuff for it. 1500 and 2000grit sandpaper. All I need is few planks of wood and some leather to make hoans like those. Or I could use sand paper and mouse pad idea too :D
