I finally got a CRK! (Story time)

I remember a little over a year ago when I got a summer job at a moving company to pay for school. At this job it required me to cut a lot of boxes and tape and other things along those lines. The only knife I had was a cheap $6 Chinese liner lock that I got 7 or so years ago at a Boy Scout summer camp. So, instead of using a utility razor like everyone else I decided to have some fun with the job and get a new knife. I ended up getting a SOG for about $60 dollars based on reviews I saw online. It was one with the spring assist and ACU camo which I was ecstatic about because I had just enlisted in the Army. After about three weeks I realized the horrible decision I made. :thumbdn:

About a month later I was looking for a new knife again and heard a lot of good things about Spyderco (which I thought were hideous at the time). I didn't want to make the same mistake again so I just bought the ugliest one that fit my budget which was a Manix 2 xl. It is a great knife but it was way too big, so I ended up getting a Paramilitary 2 right before the big para 2 obsession spread and they became impossible to get from the dealer. I thought that knife was perfect and it did everything I needed. Unfortunately I had become obsessed with collecting knives. I ended up using a lot of the money I made that summer on knives. :D

About six months later I had half a dozen quality Spyderco, a few Benchmade, Emerson, Microtech and ESEE. This entire time I was aware of the existence of the Sebenza and the price tag that I decided early on was not worth it. That is until I decided to take a short drive to go visit the BladeHQ storefront in Lehi where I only planned on getting another Spyderco but got carried away with all the knives there were to play with. I asked them about the Sebenza and they let me handle a regular Large Sebenza 21. I could not stop the itch to buy a Sebenza with any knife after those few short seconds.

Well, I went to Army Basic training and AIT for a little over half this year and have now been back just over a month. Last Saturday I couldn't fight the itch anymore, I decided just to try one out. So I looked on every forum and ebay item for a CRK Large Sebenza 21 with the blue thumbstud, I think I found a few used ones but I decided that something as bad as my itch for a Sebenza could only be satisfied with a brand new, untouched one. I only found one website that had them in stock out of the ten plus I looked on. It got here this afternoon and I could not be more pleased. It cost 200 more dollars than I I have spent on any other knife, but I could not be more happy. :D

Rest assured that I will use this thing until I die or it does (this will not be babied), It is probably going to be the knife I'll never let go of. It makes me want to try other CRK's, Striders, Hinderers, etc.... But I already know that I'll always just be coming back to this one. The regular Ti Large Sebenza 21 with the blue is by far my favorite CRK design that I have seen. I'm probably going to sell off most my other knives now so I can keep this one. I just wish I hadn't gone through so many other knives to get to this one.

Morale of the story: Stop lying to yourself and get a Sebenza!

Congrats!

I read many stories about the sebenza and as a skeptic I had to do some research. It seems there was very little mechanical complaints, only price seems to be the complaint.

so I went to the cutlery shop and asked to handle one. Fantastic knife.

of course they had striders hinderers and a few other high end (bascially a high end knife only store) and was not feeling the others. Hinderer is nearly twice the price, I could not see myself buying one of those when a sebenza is already expensive.

luckily for me I did not buy 100's of cheap folders before the sebenza, ive had maybe a total of 3 folders in my life before this.

I wouldn't say I bought a lot of cheap folders, it's just I couldn't justify getting a Sebenza. They were capable folders like the para 2 and the BM 710 or the Socom elite. I love those knives but they just aren't the Sebenza.

Whats that quote I keep seeing... "its not just a knife, its a Chris Reeve Knife!" So true! And for me at least, they are a lot like the old chip commercial, "You can't have just one!!" Welcome to the club!! :)

Congrats in the crk. Unless you're in need of money, I wouldn't sell the other knives. When I got my seb 21 I thought I wouldn't want any other knife either. But the fact is, the seb won't replace other knives. You'll miss them eventually.

It's cool to hear about you getting your sebenza!! They are amazing knives!

Welcome man!

You will love it! I am glad to hear you will be using it, it's too good to go to waste in a drawer!
+1 on keeping some other knives, if you are turning into a collector you will start to miss rotating if you sell them off. Unless you buy more sebenzas lol

Hmmm this gets me thinking about a Sebenza. I have handled them at gunshots, but so far the most expensive knife I have is a Microtech Socom Elite. I do feel that I need to experience a Sebenza plus it just seems like a gentlemans knife that has great capabilities.

Might as well! They're sweet knives my friend! One problem though... You will buy more CRK's

I'm pretty in love my 25
It just feels good
I've sold some of my other knives to get some funds for possible future CRK's

I thinking about doing the same thing, I might possibly try some other mid techs like Strider or maybe even Hinderer. I think I'm also going to get a Tanto Sebenza, those look pretty interesting.

CRK, Hinderer and Strider are not "mid-techs", they are high price production knives. Rick Hinderer and Strider make knives with hand ground blades and I suppose one could argue that those would be mid-tech knives but most certainly not the standard production pieces. :)

Today I was cutting up some boxes with it and after only two boxes it was already dull. Is it a defective product, or am I doing something wrong?

Abaker, they are like that.

as great as the knife is, edge is poorly ground for how much it costs.

many people claim how great the edge is, I dont think its thats great and apply my own polished edge and custom bevel.

once sharpened to your own taste it cuts fantastic.

I touched it up just a tad with the sharp maker and that's it. I guess I'll just have to take the time to sharpen the edge again.

I don't a very good sharpening set up, but I'll give it a try.

Congrats on your first CRK. I bought my first last August and laughed when reading comments like " one is never enough." Now I have 3 (Small 21, 25 and Umnum) in my night stand and looking for #4  I've keep my other knives and continue to purchase other brands but none reward my hand with the same visceral feedback. Enjoy, and I'd recommend you start making a short list for your next.
