I just got my paper wheels from Grizzly. I had to make some spacers to get them to go on the shaft of my grinder, and learned that I will need to get a new grinder to use these things on due to the shaft on my grinder being bent, or otherwise wobbly (yes its a technical term;) ) I sharpened a couple of old hacksaw blades and an old slip joint I keep out in the shop, along with one of those old POS survival knives with the compas on the end of the hollow handle to hair shaving sharp in about 15 minutes, for all of them! I still need some practice before I use it on my good knives, but I don't know how I was ok with taking 30-45 minutes to sharpen a blade.

So, what grinders are you guys using with your wheels? I was looking at the $26, 6" grinder from grizzly that comes up under the "customers who bought this, also bought these" thing when you look at the wheels on their website.

Thanks

I'm using an old Craftsman 6" grinder. I think its too fast and I am also building a setup to use an old dock door motor that is similar to what richard j uses. If I was buying new I would buy a variable speed grinder.

The wheels I got were the 8" ones, so I think that a 6" grinder would be best. I'm not going to use it for anything else so the smaller motor should be OK.

Ever have one of those days? Today I got the wobble issue taken care of and started playing around sharpening stuff, and after I sharpened a pair of shears I decided to try one of my decent knives (a gerber applegate combat folder) and was not able to get the wire edge to form. I then decided to practice some more on some old hacksaw blades, and couldn't get a decent edge at all. I also think that I need to recoat the coarse wheel already as I can see the paper on most of the wheel already. Maybe I didn't use enough of the wax? There is more of a learning curve on these things than I thought. Maybe I Just had beginners luck the other day.

I'm not sure what the problem would be... maybe too much pressure, or a defective wheel that was improperly coated, but something's wrong if you wore the grit off the wheel in only two days. I know it's not that you didn't use enough wax.
