uyotg also was able to join us. i wasn't able to take a lot of pictures since i spent most of the time sharing with my buddy what i've learned here and keeping eyes on him to keep risk of injury to a minimum (we brought a lot of knives that day including my axe for him to play with).

here they are gathering more fire wood:

my buddy's first feather stick - not the best looking but it'll work.

uyotg is sitting on the rock while i show my buddy the one-stick fire method and just because it's a scandi grind (my spyderco bushcraft in this case) doesn't mean it's too delicate...just gotta be reasonable when batoning through wood and that goes with any knife/grind.

starting a fire with all natural materials is always memorable for me no matter how many times i've done it before but i think teaching a newbie how to do it and watch him accomplish it is even more special! i think i was more excited for him than he was when it burst into flames :o we used beech leaves as tinder (thank you tonym for that tip!) and birch bark to start the twigs going.

these are uyotg's busses. there's no special effects involved here and no need to get your eyes checked...yes, it's a busse and it's actually a user  otherwise i wouldn't invite him back next time if he was just a knife collector :D

i wasn't able to take pics of them but the other cutting tools we brought: 1 black & 1 orange spyderco military, fallkniven f1 & s1, esee junglas and lite machete, 2 moras, gransfors bruk scandinavian forest axe, gerber folding saw and a spyderco bushcraft. the axe is still king but i wish i caught it on video how a cheap machete put the busse chopper and esee's junglas to shame in a chopping competition through hard wood :D

camp fire pic...we ate a ton of spam and kielbasa and could barely walk around camp afterwards!

conclusion: my buddy got to handle some big name knives and axe but the knife that made the best impression on him? the humble mora i gave him awhile back :)

Hey! It's me!
I had a good time  I like SPAM more than I thought

Glad you enjoyed some time in the woods learning and doing! Atmosphere is the difference between a $5 steak in a roadhouse and a $75 steak in a fancy establishment with plush carpets. Many things that are bland or unappitizing at home are feasts when cooked over a wood fire in the woods.

Two questions: What is the one-stick fire method?

I noticed your Kleen-Kanteen seems to be in the fire. Do you notice any taste difference due to the heating? Most containers, contain some sort of small amount of plastic lining, and I was wondering if the heat took it off.

Certainly brought enough steel to keep you occupied. Looks like a lot of fun.
I would have had to pack in some buns for those dogs though...

Thanks for the pics and commentary.

The one-stick fire is a sort of challenge where you create tinder, kindling, and fuel with one stick. It obviously won't last long; it's just testing your ability to make what you need to start a fire out of a single piece of wood via batoning and shaving curls. Of course it has real applications--if you can't find just the right diameter wood for building your fire, you make your own!

And the Klean Kanteen doesn't make anything taste different to my taste buds. One of its selling points is that it can be used to boil water. It doesn't say anything specifically about chemicals contaminating it... but I've noticed nothing

And they brought plenty of buns and bread for the meat

Good on you JV3 for dragging another into this insanity! You going to make it to one of the Becker gatherings some time?

Looks like a great time JV

Kleen kanteens do not have a lining.

nice to find people to go out with this time of year AND afflicted with the fever

I have used my klean canteen for boiling at least 20 times and have never noticed any flavouring or coating, great bottles.

peer pressure works too :D my buddy is a very picky eater (doesn't even eat most types of sea food) and easily grossed out but when he dropped a piece of spam on the ground he promptly picked it up, sterilized it over the fire and ate it.

see iawoodsman's video posted below. i rarely use the one-stick method but i like to mention it to newbies because it emphasizes being patient and getting all the fire prep done even before attempting the first spark.

you're welcome. we brought a lot more food than the pic shows. we took in more calories than we burned off that day :D

Looks like Fun.
I need to get out more.

definitely. we need to see more beckers in action.

^This. Plus some pics of the Fallkies.

that was my f1 - i'll take more pics next time. i got to handle uyotg's s1 and i liked it more than i thought, swedge included. reminds me of a faster, lighter bk-7.

i got him hooked on beckers too! i'd like to attend one of the becker camp outs but the previous ones were too far for me. hopefully there'll be a ct/ny/nj one.

Looks like a great time JV

thanks, man! call up rescueriley and tonym and schedule an overnighter. the last one we had was back in march - far too long.

Good stuff buddy !

thanks, pit!

i was surprised he wanted to go now that it's very cold. i think my previous camp fire pics with spam over the fire was the final tipping point!

Beach wood is the best! That stuff get's bone dry and burns hot. Looks like you had a great time.

wikipedia said the same thing about beech wood. come to think of it we had a couple of these wrist-sized pieces that burned for a very long time - far longer than i'm used to and not very smoky either. it might've been beech wood - gotta take a closer look next time.

Don't forget to invite me again if you go on an overnighter. Should be good times especially if more from here come along.

i'll probably do a 2-nighter (hike in this friday morning and leave sunday afternoon). you're welcome to join me on any of those days. ron and alvin might go for day hikes. i'll pm you when my plans are firmed out.

We have at least 4 Beckerheads in NYC, no idea why you guys don't just get together, rent a party bus, do a few rails, and drive down to Tennessee for the fun.

Certainly starting out with a good toolset with those Busses. They'll love you for it :)
