It's just too bad that they are always rusted to death. Actually that's not true. I have found iron knives from the fur trade in the north to be in good shape. I believe that it's the non mineralized and porous sandy soil that may save them.
I have found knives, fixed blade and folding, in many places. Lately I have been gaining an interest in old axe heads. I have found some good ones in the Boreal forest area, were there used to be lumber camps. The other day I found an old hatchet and thought that it was just bent junk. The tomahawk\axe guys are schooling me on it. Here's a link. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1212333-Another-found-head
Cool! The only thing I've ever been good at finding are fossils. I cant say I've ever found a knife. In the parking lot in town yesterday I did find a Case box laying on the ground but there was only crumpled up paper and gum inside. DRAT!!! My heart did skip a beat for a second though.
