I am telling you Andy - I am catching up. This is FOUR knives I have finished. Two in the last week. That HAS to be very close to your production - right?:foot:

Schmittie sent me some 1084 a while back and I promised him I would make something cool out of it. I drew up these designs and gave it my very best effort. Here are the results.

Whoa!! That is a beautiful thing you've done there. Your designs are classic, the execution looks to be very clean. The hand rubbed finish adds a nice touch. I particularly like the Companion knife.

I suspect you'll be making sheaths for these at some point. Fortunately, there is quite the detailed thread here, with some outstanding videos on leather. ;)

Thanks for sharing. I bet it was fun to do a few more. What's next on the drawing board?

Tal, which grinder are you using? Very nice work. Not a huge fan of the Spanish choils, but your plunges are great. Much better than mine.

Good job!

Nice work Tal. They're looking miles ahead of my first efforts.

Schmittie,

Thanks again bro! I saw that thread on making a sheath. I need to check that out. If I get results like those first time sheath makers have been. I will be very happy!

String and Andy,

Thank you both. I am using two different KMG's. One horizontal one vertical. I also used a surface grinder on this one.

Yeah... So... I am SUPER lucky. Stan Buzek (check out his folders) has been kind enough to be teaching me. It has been a blast. All credit for these being decent goes to him. All mistakes are mine.

Very nice Tal, I especially like the smaller one. Always wanted to make knives at some point, thanks for the inspiration.

Well, your Kephart, like most of them in my opinion, is a little on the boring side, but very nicely done! I love those grinds, and the choil. Now that companion knife has some sex appeal :)

Very nice. I especially like that taper on the top of the blade towards the tip.

I always seem to see people interchange the terms "01" and "O1" in terms of the steel. Can both designations be used or is one inaccurate? On wikipedia, it's "O" as in the letter O and not a zero. Says it's for "oil" so I guess the letter O would be the correct designation? Sorry, just a part of the OCD side of me :P

There is somewhat of a method to the madness. O-1 is an oil-hardening tool steel, and warm oil is used for the quenching process. W-1 is a water-hardening tool steel and will harden in warm water...though brine is used by most I think. A-2 is an air-hardening tool steel and hardens in still air. BUT, then D-2 is also an air-hardening tool steel. Perhaps the D comes from the dies often made from it, I don't know...

I normally use S-1 steel. That is spittle hardened tool steel. I tend to use dragon spittle. But that has been hard to source as of late.

One does not simply walk into a dragon cave to procure dragon spittle.

Very noce work!! I wish my first few were near as nice and clean as those! I look forward to seeing more!

You always crack me up. I'm still waiting for the Bushtool version 2.0 :)
