i drove a buddy to a wet weather creek to get some sand and seen this huge burl. i called the landowner and asked if i can have it. the entire tree is more or less dotted with burls of various sizes. i'll be curious as to how much it weighs. the fun part will be getting it put up at the house. it will be a conversation piece for sure.

the tree splits about wher my buddys hand is and on the other side the burl continues and goes up a little higher. i'm not sure what type of tree it is but the bark is really black.

Cool Burl! Also a really cool dragons face below and left of your buddies hand. You just know theres gotta
be something in that one.
Ken.

Wow. I am interested to learn more about how you process this;)

I have found a few that I wonder about...

i cant see which one you mean. how far below and how far left?
Just to the left of the web between index finger and thumb on your buddies hand is a gray bulge- left
of that theres another one (left eye) form a "v" from those two points to make his nose.. Suppose it could
be a mad buffalo. Maybe my imagination is a little to vivid.

Wood cancers can be so beautiful!

I use to think it was from the root ball, but then learned different. I have since seen it in many places. The street I live on is lined with Oak, and many of them have these lumps jutting out here and there, I keep waiting for the city to cut em down :D.

Naw, I saw it there right away.

Me too. Might have been all the mental experiments I did when I was younger.

BTW Richard I'll have to post a burl I have growing right up the street from me. Darn thing is a burl with a tree growing out of it.

Actually, that piece isn't in my possession. But I do have a claim on a chunk of it.

go for it carl. post it in here.

i know one thing, there are more burls further up on that tree than what i'll ever use. some of the lucky members in my friends list will get an offer to get some for the cost of shipping :D

Very cool Richard!! Anyway of determining what kind of tree it is? I guess I never really knew what a burl was until now?! Ha! I learned something today!

carl that is CRAZY !!!!

Richard, I'm blown away, so glad you posted this... I've never known or thought to find out what burl looks like on the outside :)

I'm going hunting now :D

i talked to my buddy frosty today and he said he knows where there are several more in the same woods that are even larger. i think i'm going to look around a little better for burls as i drive through the woods.

carl, that is one huge burl and then some. all you would need to do is cut off a 3' wide hunk and you would have enough for knife handles to last a few decades. i know the kind of tree that is but at this moment i cant think of the name. in the fall it has some kind of seed pod (i'm guessing about the seed pod but thats what i figure it is) just a little smaller than a golf ball that is sticky inside when you cut them open.

Richard,
Thanks for sharing buddy! I want to see some pics when you start to slab it out!! Should be very cool.

ridge-runner, there are some cottonwood trees around but the dark colored bark has me wondering since most cottonwood trees i see have grey bark. i'll know more when i cut into the 2 trunks that split off the base. i have a vid i took that might show the tree a lot better. send me an email and i'll send you the vid if you want to check it out and see if you can tell for sure what it is. would the fungus that causes the burl make the bark dark in color?

jonny, a buddy with a saw mill is going to help me cut it up. since there are burls all up the tree i might send you a piece to check out depending on what they look like. its possible the tree could be rotting from the way it looks further up the tree on one side. it might be hard to get it out since there are deer hunters out and the only time i can get help is in the evening when the hunters are in the woods.
