Hey guys while going through some old stuff I found an old victorinox.
The handle scales are Alox, but the emblem is just a cross (like a wegner SAK cross) but it's just the cross the shield nothing around no red around it just a cross. Just an alox cross.
It has the exact same tools as the electrician http://www.swissarmy.com/MultiTools/Pages/Product.aspx?category=doityourself&product=53781&
.
I know its victorinox because the blade is stamped victorinox.

The older alox SAKs (at least some models) were marked that way. I'm not sure when they added the shield. I have an older Soldier that just has the cross, I'd guess I bought it 15 years ago or so.

like this...

I also note that the main blade on this knife is noticeably thicker than the current models.

As others have already pointed out it is not that weird - it is merely an older version of the Electrician.

This is from a Victorinox brochure circa 1988 -

They made a few models with plain silver alox cross. The blade thickness is pretty much the same as all the other "Pioneer" series alox SAKs.

I have an alox Dutch army knive made by Victorinox. It is a Pioneer that was issued in 1989. There's no red shield, only the silver cross. The blade isn't different from the current Pioneer.

Yah the blade does seem a little thick for a SAK.

Note that the blades of the alox models are a bit larger than those of the cellidor models, e.g. Spartan or Huntsman.

Does this give the knife any more value?

I am not a collector, but I think there are collectors who are willing to pay a bit more for an old alox model with silver cross than the actual price of a current alox model. Those models are not made anymore, so they will become rare some day and become a collectors item. Perhaps they already are, I don't know.

I have a red pioneer that has the plain white cross, blade says 98 on it. Think I bought it around 1999 or so for about 20 dollars. So I would guess they were made that way until at least 1998. I think even older models had brass liners, which would add value. I'd spring a bit extra myself for one,but it wouldn't be worth more than double what a modern model would cost. Then again,if it was a discontinued model, maybe triple the cost. A red farmer with brass liners would bring a smile to many faces in this forum.

Sorry to dig out old threads but I was in one of the shop today looking for a Victorinox Alox Electrician, I was told it was the last one in that shop and only when i got home, I realised it has the plain silver cross on, on the blade it says 98. Quite happy with the surprise.

That's a nice surprise. If I am correct, the blades with a year stamped on them were meant for the Soldier model. However, since the production of these blades was sometimes larger than the need, the blades were used for other alox models too.

Thanks for the information, you learn something new everyday, 1998 was a special year for me too. I liked it so much, I actually bought another.
